Overview

EN ISO 1833-3:2020 is an international standard published by CEN specifying a quantitative chemical analysis method for textiles. The standard focuses on determining the mass percentage of acetate fibers in textile mixtures using acetone as a solvent. This standardized method is essential for accurately measuring the fiber composition of textiles that combine acetate with various other natural and synthetic fibers.

The method involves dissolving acetate using acetone, followed by weighing the undissolved residue to calculate the acetate content by difference. This standard ensures precise, reproducible results for textile manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and regulatory bodies involved in fiber content verification.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Analysis of mixtures of acetate fibers combined with:
    • Natural fibers such as wool, animal hair, silk, protein fibers, cotton (scoured, kiered, or bleached), flax (linen), hemp, jute, abaca, alfa, coir, broom, ramie, sisal
    • Regenerated and synthetic fibers including cupro, viscose, modal, polyamide, polyester, polypropylene, acrylic, elastolefin, elastomultiester, melamine, polypropylene/polyamide bicomponent, polyacrylate, glass fibers
  • Exclusions: Not applicable for textiles containing modacrylic fibers, certain chlorofibers, or acetate fibers with surface deacetylation.
  • Principle: Dissolution of acetate fibers in acetone, followed by filtration, drying, and weighing of insoluble residue to determine fiber composition.
  • Test Procedure:
    • Use of 100 ml acetone per gram of specimen
    • Extraction periods totalling 1 hour with shaking and decanting steps
    • Filtration through weighed crucibles and drying to constant weight
  • Calculation: Acetate content expressed as mass percentage based on weight difference before and after solvent treatment.
  • Accuracy: Method precision with confidence limits within ±1 percentage point at 95% confidence level.

Applications

EN ISO 1833-3:2020 provides critical support in the textile industry, where determining fiber content accurately impacts:

  • Quality Control: Verifying fiber compositions in raw materials and finished textiles to ensure compliance with product specifications.
  • Material Labeling: Assisting manufacturers and retailers in providing accurate fiber content information compliant with regulations and consumer expectations.
  • Research and Development: Facilitating innovation in textile blends with precise knowledge of fiber proportions.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Meeting national and international regulations concerning fiber identification and labeling in textiles.
  • Trade and Certification: Providing a standardized method for contract enforcement, customs classification, and certification of textile goods.

This method's focus on acetate and its compatibility with a broad range of other fibers makes it versatile for a variety of textile analyses involving mixed-fiber products.

Related Standards

EN ISO 1833-3:2020 is part of the broader ISO 1833 series on quantitative chemical analysis of textiles. Related standards include:

  • ISO 1833-1: General principles of testing and sample preparation for quantitative chemical analysis of textiles.
  • Other parts of ISO 1833 address different fiber mixtures or methods to analyze specific fiber types.
  • Standalone standards for fiber identification and blending analysis complement the chemical dissolution techniques defined in this standard.

For detailed chemical analysis guidelines on fiber content measurement, laboratories often refer to these related ISO standards to cover the full range of textile compositions beyond acetate-containing blends.

By following EN ISO 1833-3:2020, textile professionals ensure reliable, repeatable, and internationally recognized results for acetate fiber quantification, supporting transparency and quality across the textile supply chain.
