Textile fibres - Determination of breaking force and elongation at break of individual fibres (ISO 5079:2020)

This document specifies the method and conditions of test for the determination of the breaking force and elongation at break of individual fibres in the conditioned or wet state.
The determination of these fibre properties, when carried out on different kinds of testing equipment, will not generally give identical results. To avoid such differences, this document is restricted to the use of constant-rate-of-extension testing machine.
It is applicable to all fibres, including crimped fibres, provided that the length of fibre available enables the gauge length specified in this document.
NOTE    For natural fibres (especially wool and cotton), the breaking test most commonly performed is that of bundles of fibres (see ISO 3060 and IWTO 32‑82).

Dieses Dokument legt das Verfahren und die Prüfbedingungen zur Bestimmung der Höchstzugkraft und Höchstzugkraftdehnung an einzelnen Fasern im konditionierten oder nassen Zustand fest.
Die Bestimmung dieser Fasereigenschaften führt im Allgemeinen nicht zu den gleichen Ergebnissen, wenn die Prüfung mit Geräten verschiedener Art durchgeführt wird. Um derartige Unterschiede zu vermeiden, ist dieses Dokument auf Prüfmaschinen mit konstanter Dehnungsgeschwindigkeit beschränkt.
Es ist anzuwenden für alle Fasern, einschließlich der gekräuselten Fasern, vorausgesetzt, dass die zur Verfügung stehende Faserlänge für die in diesem Dokument festgelegte Einspannlänge ausreicht.
ANMERKUNG   Bei Naturfasern (insbesondere Wolle und Baumwolle) wird die Zugprüfung hauptsächlich an Faserbündeln vorgenommen (siehe ISO 3060 und IWTO 32 82).

Le présent document spécifie une méthode et des conditions d'essai pour la détermination de la force de rupture et de l'allongement de rupture de fibres individuelles à l'état conditionné ou mouillé.
La détermination de ces propriétés des fibres, lorsqu'elle est effectuée sur différentes sortes d'appareils d'essai, ne donne généralement pas des résultats identiques. Afin d'éviter ces différences, le présent document s'est limité à l'appareil d'essai à vitesse constante d'allongement.
Il est applicable à toutes fibres, y compris les fibres frisées, à condition que leur longueur disponible permette d'utiliser la longueur entre repères spécifiée dans le présent document.
NOTE    Pour des fibres naturelles (en particulier la laine et le coton), l'essai de rupture le plus couramment réalisé est celui de faisceaux de fibres (voir ISO 3060 et IWTO 32‑82).

This document (EN ISO 5079:2020) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38 "Textiles" in
collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 248 “Textiles and textile products” the secretariat of
which is held by BSI.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by April 2021, and conflicting national standards shall be
withdrawn at the latest by April 2021.

This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 5079:1995), which has been technically
revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— addition of “ISO 3696”, “ISO 7500-1”and “ISO 10012”as normative references;
— adjustment of “ISO 3060”and “IWTO 32” from normative references to bibliography;
— revision of the definitions of “breaking force” (3.1), “force at rapture” (3.2), “extension” (3.3),
“elongation at break” (3.5), “elongation at rupture” (3.6) “gauge length” (3.7), “initial length” (3.8),
“pretension” (3.9) and “breaking density” (3.11);
— deletion of terminological entry for “tension” (former 3.10);
— addition of terminological entry for “constant-rate-of-extension testing machine” (3.10);
— addition of a note in Clause 4;
— redrafting of text describing the requirements for CRE testing machine in 5.1;
— addition of “Tweezers” (5.2);
— revision of requirements for wetting solution in 5.3 (former 5.2);
— addition of details about preparation of test specimen in Clause 7;
