Overview
EN 13025-1:2005 is a European Standard developed by CEN that defines nominal filling volumes for light gauge metal containers designed for general use. This standard covers round, cylindrical, and tapered metal containers with capacities up to 40,000 ml (40 liters) and a metal thickness not exceeding 0.49 mm nominal. It provides a common framework specifying the range of nominal filling volumes typically used in packaging industry applications, ensuring uniformity and compatibility across manufacturing and distribution processes.
The standard serves packaging manufacturers, quality control specialists, and supply chain stakeholders by setting clear volume designations and recommendations for container diameters, supporting efficient packaging solutions that protect contents and minimize product loss.
Key Topics
Nominal Filling Volumes
EN 13025-1:2005 specifies a series of nominal volumetric capacities from 75 ml to 40,000 ml, enabling standardized container identification and ensuring precise filling and labeling protocols.Container Types Covered
The standard applies to round, cylindrical, and tapered metal containers for general use, broadly encompassing containers such as cans and tins used for food, chemicals, and other products.Metal Thickness Limit
The metal thickness must not exceed 0.49 mm nominal, targeting light gauge containers that balance durability and material efficiency.Recommended Diameters
Annex A provides recommended nominal diameters linked to each filling volume, facilitating optimized container sizing. These recommendations include tolerances of ±1 mm for diameters up to 153 mm, and ±2 mm for larger diameters, accounting for manufacturing variations.Drainability Testing
Annex B normatively specifies drainability test methods for containers and drums, measuring residual liquid volume after drainage. This ensures practical usability by defining criteria that impact product discharge and container hygiene.Standardization Benefits
Harmonized standards improve interchangeability, manufacturing precision, and quality assurance, promoting effective packaging that reduces damage and product waste.
Applications
Packaging Manufacturing
Allows production lines to standardize container volumes and dimensions, improving efficiency and reducing errors.Product Filling and Labeling
Ensures correct volume labeling and compatibility with filling machines, essential for food, beverage, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors.Supply Chain and Distribution
Facilitates logistics by standardizing container sizes, aiding stacking, transport, and storage optimization.Quality Control and Testing
Supports consistent testing protocols for drainability, verifying container performance and residual product retention to comply with hygiene and usability standards.Regulatory Compliance
Manufacturers and suppliers can demonstrate adherence to European packaging regulations through alignment with EN 13025-1:2005.
