Abstract

This document specifies the construction characteristics, performances and marking related to safety and the rational use of energy of portable, flat gas appliances directly supplied at the LPG vapour pressure, incorporating a gas cartridge complying with EN 417:2012, inserted horizontally in the chassis.
NOTE 1   These appliances are referred to in the body of the text as “appliances”.
This document covers appliances for outdoor or in well ventilated areas uses only.
This document does not cover appliances supplied by an external gas source.
For example, the following types of appliances are covered:
a)   cooking appliances (stoves, barbecues);
b)   heating appliances.
This document specifies the requirements applicable to these appliances or their functional sections whether or not the latter are independent or incorporated into an assembly.
Appliances covered by this document are not connected to a flue for the discharge of products of combustion and are not connected to the mains electricity supply.
This document covers neither appliances supplied with LPG in the liquid phase nor appliance with fixed integral container which could be refilled by the user.
This document does not cover appliances of direct pressure propane category.
Requirements for rational use of energy have been considered for stove burners.
NOTE 2   However, such requirements have not been considered for the other types of appliances because:
-   for barbecues, this type of cooking varies according to the type of food and region where the appliance is used;
-   for heating appliances, all the heat produced is discharged into the environment.

EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2 is a CEN draft amendment for dedicated liquefied petroleum gas appliances. It covers portable, flat gas appliances directly supplied at LPG vapour pressure, using a horizontal cartridge in the chassis and a cartridge complying with EN 417:2012. The document is aimed at manufacturers, test laboratories and conformity teams that need to check safety-related construction, performance and marking.

What does EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2 specify?

EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2 specifies changes to the European Standard for appliances used outdoors or in well ventilated areas only. It applies to cooking appliances such as stoves and barbecues, and to heating appliances, and it excludes appliances supplied from an external gas source, in the liquid phase, or with a fixed integral container refillable by the user.

The amendment is organized as modifications to Clause 2, 3.26, Clauses 5 to 8, Annex B, a new informative Annex D, and Annex ZA.

Annex / partWhat it covers
Annex BTests on taps
Annex DExplanations of technical choices for the pressure sensitive safety device, FSD, and plate thickness
Annex ZARelationship with EU legislation

What are the key requirements of EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2?

EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2 tightens several safety and usability points that matter in real products and tests.

Materials, assembly and maintenance

  • Clause 5.3 requires rubber based materials to meet EN 549:2019+A2:2024 classes A2/H2 minimum and to be LPG resistant. For food-contact parts, the material must be corrosion resistant and non-toxic.
  • Clauses 5.4.1 and 5.4.2 require user-assembled parts and user-cleaned parts to be designed so they cannot be put together wrongly when the instructions are followed. This reduces assembly errors and service issues.

Stability, ignition and flame safety

  • Clause 5.5.2 and new 6.5.2.4 add a flame stability check for flat portable gas heater on a 10° incline, with the cartridge cooled and the appliance operated with the tap fully open. This gives a defined tilt test for unstable flame behavior.
  • Clause 5.23 adds that, after closing the tap, the flame shall extinguish within 6 s maximum. In practice, this limits delayed flame persistence after shut-off.

Pressure, marking and safety devices

  • Clause 5.10 changes the pressure sensitive safety device requirement so gas supply is stopped between 4 and 7 bar. That matters for design settings and for pressure test verification.
  • Clause 5.31 strengthens marking durability: after the test, markings must still be visible and legible, and the label must not be removable by hand or curl up.
  • Clause 7.1 and 8.2.3 update appliance marking and instructions, including the phrases for outdoor use or well ventilated areas and a warning against accessories not allowed by the instructions.

Tap tests and high-temperature safety

  • Annex B replaces the tap tests with soundness checks after temperature conditioning and after 2 000 endurance cycles. The leak limit is kept very low, so taps must remain tight after heat, cold and repeated operation.
  • Clause 6.28 updates the high-temperature test for stove burners to use a thicker stainless steel plate and a deformation limit. This makes the test setup more robust and easier to judge.

What terms does EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2 define?

  • LPG - liquefied petroleum gas, the fuel used by the appliances covered by the standard.
  • FSD - flame supervision device, a safety device linked to flame presence.
  • ODS - oxygen depletion sensor, a device noted in Annex D as part of heater safety logic.
  • Pressure sensitive safety device - a device that stops gas supply when pressure rises into the specified range.
  • Gas cartridge - the cartridge inserted horizontally in the chassis and required to comply with EN 417:2012.

Who uses EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2?

EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2 is used by appliance manufacturers, component suppliers, and test laboratories working on portable LPG stoves, barbecues and heaters. It is also used by quality, compliance and regulatory teams that need a common basis for safety tests, marking checks and product documentation.

What changed in EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2 from the previous edition?

Compared with EN 17476:2021+A1:2022, this draft amendment updates or adds:

  • normative references;
  • design requirements for assembly, cleaning and maintenance;
  • a new inclined-plane flame stability test for flat portable gas heaters;
  • the pressure value for the pressure sensitive safety device, changed to 7 bar;
  • removal of the mandatory FSD sentence for heating appliances;
  • a 6 s limit for flame extinction after closing the tap;
  • clearer marking durability, appliance marking and instructions for use;
  • a new description of the stainless steel plate used in the high-temperature test;
  • a reworded Annex B;
  • a new informative Annex D;
  • updates to Annex ZA.

Which standards are used with EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2?

EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2 uses these named standards in its requirements and notes:

  • EN 30-1-1:2021+A1:2023 - referenced for a test method in Clause 6.
  • EN 125:2022+A1:2024 - referenced for flame supervision devices.
  • EN 437:2021 - used for test gases, test pressures and appliance categories.
  • EN 549:2019+A2:2024 - sets the rubber material classes for seals and diaphragms.
  • EN 417:2012 - defines the cartridge used by the appliances in scope.
  • EN 1672-2:2020 - cited in the food-contact material note.
  • EN 10088-1:2023 - cited for stainless steel grades in Annex D.

What does the EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/prA2 document contain?

The document contains clause-by-clause amendments to the base standard, including revised material, assembly, stability, ignition, marking and safety-device requirements. It also adds a specific inclined-plane test for flat portable gas heaters and revises tap tests in Annex B. Annex D explains the technical reasons behind selected choices, and Annex ZA updates the EU legislation linkage.
