SIST EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/oprA2:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of CEN draft amendment prA2 to EN 17476:2021+A1:2022. It covers portable, flat liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vapour pressure appliances with a horizontal EN 417 cartridge in the chassis, for outdoor or well ventilated use, and it specifies safety-related construction, performance and marking requirements. The amendment updates several test methods, safety devices and marking rules for these appliances.
What does SIST EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/oprA2:2026 specify?
SIST EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/oprA2:2026 specifies the construction characteristics, performance requirements and marking rules for portable, flat gas appliances directly supplied at LPG vapour pressure. It applies to appliances and functional sections used for safety and the rational use of energy, especially cooking appliances such as stoves and barbecues, and heating appliances.
The scope is limited to appliances for outdoor use or use in well ventilated areas. It excludes appliances supplied by an external gas source, appliances supplied with LPG in the liquid phase, appliances with a fixed integral container that can be refilled by the user, direct pressure propane appliances, appliances connected to a flue, and appliances connected to the mains electricity supply.
The amendment is organized as clause-by-clause changes to Clause 2, 3.26, 5.3 to 5.31, 6.1.1, 6.5.2.4, 6.21.2, 6.23, 6.24, 6.28, 6.32, 7.1 and 8.2.3, plus updates to Annex B, Annex D, Annex ZA and the bibliography.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex B | Tests on taps, including temperature resistance, endurance and leak checks |
| Annex D | Informative explanations for technical choices such as the pressure-sensitive safety device, flame supervision device and plate thickness |
| Annex ZA | Relationship with EU legislation and essential requirements |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/oprA2:2026?
SIST EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/oprA2:2026 mainly tightens or revises the safety tests, device requirements and marking rules that manufacturers must meet. In practice, it affects design, validation testing, user instructions and final appliance marking.
Safety devices and flame behaviour
Clause 5.10 changes the pressure-sensitive safety device requirement so that gas supply is stopped between 4 and 7 bar under the specified test condition. For manufacturers, this means the device setting and test verification must match the revised pressure range.
Clause 5.14 removes the mandatory flame supervision device requirement for heating appliances and keeps the link to EN 125 for thermoelectric flame supervision devices. The same amendment adds informative technical explanations in Annex D, which helps designers understand the safety rationale used in the standard.
Clause 5.23 adds a limit for flame extinction after closing the tap: the flame shall go out within 6 s. This matters because it checks valve and burner behaviour after shut-off.
Materials, assembly and maintenance
Clause 5.3 requires rubber based materials to comply with EN 549 classes A2/H2 minimum and to be LPG resistant. It also requires food-contact materials to be corrosion resistant and non-toxic, which affects material selection for parts that may touch food.
Clauses 5.4.1 and 5.4.2 require user-assembled parts to be designed so they cannot be put together incorrectly, and user-cleaned parts to be easy to access and impossible to refit wrongly. This supports safe assembly and reduces misuse during cleaning and reassembly.
Stability, marking and instructions
Clause 5.5.2 adds a stability check for flat portable gas heaters on an inclined plane, and new subclause 6.5.2.4 gives the test setup. The heater is tested with a full cartridge on a 10° slope, so the flame must remain stable under that condition.
Clause 5.31 strengthens marking durability: markings must stay visible and legible after the durability test, and the label must not be removable by hand or curl up. Clause 7.1 also requires the outdoor-use or well-ventilated-area warning text on the appliance, with a 3 mm letter height for heating appliances.
Clause 8.2.3 adds warnings against using accessories not allowed by the instructions of use. This is important for controlling unsafe add-on parts in the field.
Tap testing and high-temperature safety
Annex B is fully replaced with new tests on taps for resistance to temperature and endurance. It sets leak acceptance after conditioning and after 2,000 cycles, so tap design and production quality can be checked consistently.
Clause 6.28 changes the safety-at-high-temperature test for stove burners by specifying a stainless steel plate of AISI 304 or AISI 310 and a thickness of 10 mm. That affects laboratory setup and the way deformation is judged during testing.
What terms does SIST EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/oprA2:2026 define?
- Appliance - the term used in the document for the portable LPG appliance covered by the standard.
- Horizontal cartridge - the gas cartridge inserted horizontally in the chassis.
- Pressure sensitive safety device - a device that stops gas supply when pressure reaches the specified range.
- Flame supervision device (FSD) - a device that monitors flame presence and acts on flame loss.
- Atmosphere sensing device (ODS) - a safety device that switches off the heater if oxygen level drops below a certain value.
- Flat portable gas heater - a heater type specifically referenced in the new inclined-plane stability test.
Who uses SIST EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/oprA2:2026?
Manufacturers of portable LPG cooking and heating appliances use this standard for design, materials selection, marking and type testing. Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies use it to set up the prescribed safety and endurance tests.
Quality managers, buyers and compliance teams use it to check that the appliance is intended for outdoor or well ventilated use, that the cartridge arrangement matches the scope, and that the safety devices and instructions are aligned with the standard.
What changed in SIST EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/oprA2:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 17476:2021+A1:2022/oprA2:2026 modifies EN 17476:2021+A1:2022 by:
