Inorganic fertilizers - Determination of the copper content in ammonium nitrate fertilizers of high nitrogen content
This document specifies a method for the determination of the copper content in ammonium nitrate fertilizers of high nitrogen content.
This document is applicable to the fertilizing products blends where a blend is a mix of at least two of the following components: fertilizers, liming materials, soil improvers, growing media, inhibitors, plant biostimulants, and where the following category: inorganic fertilizers is the highest % in the blend by mass or volume, or in the case of liquid form by dry mass. If inorganic fertilizer is not the highest % in the blend, the European Standard for the highest % of the blend applies. In case a fertilizing product blend is composed of components in equal quantity, the user decides which standard to apply. Variations in analytical methods for fertilizing product blends can lead to differing results as some components or matrix interactions can affect the outcome. Validation procedures have shown that developed standard methods are robust and reliable across diverse product compositions, but possible interferences and unexpected results when analysing fertilizing product blends are possible.

Overview
prEN 17762: Inorganic fertilizers - Determination of the copper content in ammonium nitrate fertilizers of high nitrogen content is a draft European Standard developed by CEN/TC 260. This standard defines a robust analytical method for accurately determining copper levels in ammonium nitrate fertilizers, specifically those with high nitrogen content. It applies to a wide range of fertilizer blends where inorganic fertilizers predominate, encompassing not only straight fertilizers but also complex blends containing components such as liming materials, soil improvers, plant biostimulants, and others.
Copper content in fertilizers is a critical parameter, impacting both crop safety and environmental compliance. Reliable and harmonized analysis supports manufacturers, regulatory authorities, and agricultural professionals in ensuring product quality and meeting EU regulatory requirements.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Applies to ammonium nitrate fertilizers of high nitrogen content
- Covers blends where inorganic fertilizer is the principal component by mass, volume, or dry mass
- Provides user guidance when blends contain equal proportions of components
Analytical Method
- Copper is determined through either atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES)
- Standardized procedures ensure accuracy and reliability across diverse fertilizer matrices
- Includes clear requirements for reagents, apparatus, and sample preparation
Sampling and Sample Preparation
- Follows principles laid out in EN 1482-2 for representative sampling and preparation
- Emphasizes the importance of preventing contamination and ensuring sample integrity
Precision and Reliability
- Precision validated through inter-laboratory studies
- Addresses potential interferences when analyzing complex fertilizing product blends
- Recognizes the robustness of the method but notes that product blend variability may affect results
Applications
Implementation of prEN 17762 is valuable across the fertilizer production and supply chain:
Compliance Verification
- Manufacturers can demonstrate conformity to European fertilizer regulations regarding trace element content
- Supports regulatory bodies in market surveillance and product control
Quality Assurance and Product Labelling
- Accurate copper determination allows for truthful product declarations, supporting marketing and transparency
- Facilitates quality control in production and supply processes
Agricultural Best Practices
- Enables agronomists, distributors, and farmers to assess copper levels, optimizing plant nutrition while minimizing risks of over-application and environmental harm
Fertilizer Blends
- Particularly relevant for complex mixes where inorganic fertilizer content is significant
- Ensures consistent analytical approach across diverse product formulations
Related Standards
For comprehensive fertilizer analysis and quality management, the following standards are closely related and often used in conjunction:
- EN 1482-2: Fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors - Sampling and sample preparation - Part 2: General sample preparation provisions
- prEN 12944-1: Fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors - Vocabulary - Part 1: General terms
