EN ISO 8067:2026 is a CEN standard for determining the tear strength of flexible cellular polymeric materials. It specifies two laboratory methods: Method A with a trouser test piece and Method B with an angle test piece without a nick. The document is written for testing flexible foam materials where tear resistance has to be measured in a repeatable way.

What does EN ISO 8067:2026 specify?

EN ISO 8067:2026 specifies the scope of the tear-strength test and the full test workflow, from apparatus and test-piece preparation to calculation and reporting. It is organized into clauses on apparatus, test pieces, number of test pieces, conditioning, procedure, expression of results, and test report, plus one informative annex on precision.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex APrecision comparison for the two types of test piece

The document covers two tear methods for flexible cellular polymeric materials only. Clause 1 names Method A and Method B, and the rest of the document explains how to prepare, test, calculate, and report the result for each method.

What are the key requirements of EN ISO 8067:2026?

EN ISO 8067:2026 requires a tensile-testing machine that shows the force at rupture, with accuracy class 2 or better to ISO 7500-1. In practice, the machine must be able to capture the maximum force cleanly, because that value is used directly in the tear-strength result.

Test pieces and orientation

Clause 5 requires test pieces free of voids and flow lines. They may be taken with or without skin, but if the material has a predominant direction of cellular structure, the test piece has to be oriented relative to the predominant foam-rise direction, and any unavoidable orientation must be stated in the test report.

Method A uses a trouser test piece cut from sheet material, with a 45 mm to 55 mm cut at one end and a marked tear length of 25 mm. Method B uses an angle test piece cut from a sheet with thickness between 10 mm and 15 mm. These shapes matter because they control how the tear starts and propagates.

Number of test pieces

Clause 6 requires three test pieces. Additional test pieces are used if the spread of results is too large or if the tear path deviates during Method A. This keeps the reported value representative of the material rather than a single abnormal tear.

Conditioning before test

Clause 7 sets the conditioning rules. Materials are normally not tested before 72 h after manufacture, unless earlier results are shown to stay within ±10 % of the 72 h mean. Test pieces are then conditioned for at least 16 h in one of two specified atmospheres, and quality-control testing may use shorter manufacture and conditioning times within stated limits.

Procedure and result calculation

Clause 8 requires thickness measurement in accordance with ISO 1923 before the tear test. For Method A, the jaw speed is 50 mm/min to 500 mm/min, and the tear is followed until 25 ± 5 mm has been torn; rupture before 20 mm means the piece is rejected. For referee purposes, Method A uses 50 ± 5 mm/min. For Method B, the specimen is clamped symmetrically, the same speed range applies, and the referee speed is 500 ± 50 mm/min.

Clause 9 defines tear strength R as the maximum force divided by the original thickness, reported in newtons per centimetre (N/cm). The result is the median of the three values, and if one or more values differs by more than 20 % from that median, two more test pieces are tested and the median of all five values is reported.

Reporting

Clause 10 requires the report to identify the document, the material, the test-piece type, conditioning, jaw speed, sampling location, predominant cellular direction if relevant, skin surfaces if any, original thickness, median tear strength, deviations, and the test date. This makes the result traceable for quality control, product comparison, and dispute work.

What terms does EN ISO 8067:2026 define?

  • Tear strength R - The maximum force per unit thickness observed when a test piece is stretched to rupture.
  • Method A - The tear test using a trouser test piece.
  • Method B - The tear test using an angle test piece without a nick.
  • Trouser test piece - The specimen shape used for Method A, with a pre-cut end that starts the tear.
  • Angle test piece - The specimen shape used for Method B, cut from a sheet with a V-shaped side.
  • Predominant foam-rise direction - The main direction of the cellular structure, used to orient the specimen.
  • Conditioning - The required storage atmosphere and time before testing.
  • Referee purposes - The stricter test conditions used when a formal or disputed result is needed.

Who uses EN ISO 8067:2026?

EN ISO 8067:2026 is used by laboratories that test flexible cellular polymeric materials, by manufacturers of foam products, and by quality-control teams that need comparable tear-strength results. It is also useful for buyers and technical reviewers who need to compare materials using the same test method and reporting format.

What changed in EN ISO 8067:2026 from the previous edition?

The foreword says this edition cancels and replaces ISO 8067:2018 and that it has been technically revised. The main change stated in the document is in Clause 10 f), where the location and number of surfaces with skin were added.

Which standards are used with EN ISO 8067:2026?

  • ISO 1923 - Used to measure the thickness of the test piece before calculating tear strength.
  • ISO 7500-1 - Sets the machine calibration and verification level for the tensile-testing machine force system.
  • ISO/TR 9272 - Used in Annex A to calculate the precision data for the comparative trial.

What does the EN ISO 8067:2026 document contain?

The document contains the two test methods, specimen shapes, conditioning requirements, test speeds, result formula, and reporting items needed to measure tear strength. It also includes figures for the trouser and angle test pieces and the test arrangement for Method A, plus a worked precision comparison in Annex A. Annex A compares the two specimen types using flexible polyurethane foam and presents precision data that support method selection and laboratory assessment.
