ISO 8067:2026 is an ISO standard for measuring the tear strength of flexible cellular polymeric materials. It specifies two test methods - Method A with a trouser test piece and Method B with an angle test piece without a nick - for laboratories, manufacturers, and others who need comparable tear-strength results.

What does ISO 8067:2026 specify?

ISO 8067:2026 specifies how to determine tear strength for flexible cellular polymeric materials using two defined specimen types and test procedures. The document is organized into clauses on scope, references, terms, apparatus, test pieces, number of test pieces, conditioning, procedure, expression of results, and the test report.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AInformative precision comparison for the trouser test piece and the angle test piece without a nick, including comparative trial data and precision figures

What are the key requirements of ISO 8067:2026?

Apparatus and measurement

ISO 8067:2026 requires a tensile-testing machine that indicates the force at rupture, with machine accuracy class 2 or higher in ISO 7500-1. The machine may be automatic, or it may use a stylus or scale that keeps the maximum force after rupture. In practice, this means the test setup must capture the peak force reliably, because that value is used in the tear-strength calculation.

Test piece preparation and orientation

ISO 8067:2026 requires test pieces to be free of voids and flow lines, and they may be taken with or without skin. If the material has a predominant direction of cellular structure, the trouser test piece and the angle test piece must be oriented relative to the predominant foam-rise direction as described in the figures. If that orientation cannot be followed, the report has to state the orientation actually used, so the result can be interpreted correctly.

Method A and Method B specimens

For Method A, ISO 8067:2026 uses a trouser test piece cut from a sheet with a band knife or cutting die, with a marked tear length and a cut made at one end. For Method B, the test piece is cut from a sheet 10 mm to 15 mm thick with a die of the stated shape. The figures show the required geometry and the point where thickness is measured, so specimen preparation is not left to local practice.

Number of test pieces and conditioning

ISO 8067:2026 requires three test pieces to be tested. More test pieces are used if the spread of results is too large, or to compensate for deviation in tear progress. Before testing, the material or test pieces are conditioned for at least 16 h in one of two specified atmospheres, and testing is normally not done less than 72 h after manufacture unless the stated comparison criteria are met.

Test procedure

ISO 8067:2026 sets a jaw speed range of 50 mm/min to 500 mm/min for both methods. For Method A, the ends are spread so the force acts in the specified direction, and the maximum force is recorded when the tear has travelled 25 mm ± 5 mm; if rupture occurs before 20 mm, the test piece is rejected. For referee purposes, Method A uses 50 mm/min ± 5 mm/min, while Method B uses 500 mm/min ± 50 mm/min.

Result expression and reporting

ISO 8067:2026 calculates tear strength as force divided by original thickness, expressed in newtons per centimetre. The reported result is the median of the three calculated values, and if one or more values differs by more than 20% from the median, two additional test pieces are tested and the median of all five values is reported. The test report also has to record the material, test-piece type, conditioning, jaw speed, sampling location, skin surfaces, thickness, result, deviations, unusual features, and test date.

What terms does ISO 8067:2026 define?

  • Tear strength - the maximum force per unit thickness observed when a test piece is stretched to rupture.
  • Method A - the procedure that uses a trouser test piece.
  • Method B - the procedure that uses an angle test piece without a nick.
  • Trouser test piece - the rectangular specimen with a cut end used to start tearing in Method A.
  • Angle test piece - the V-shaped specimen used in Method B.
  • Predominant foam-rise direction - the main structural direction in the cellular material that governs specimen orientation.
  • Conditioning - holding the material or test pieces for a specified time in a specified atmosphere before testing.
  • Referee purposes - the reference conditions used when an agreed, dispute-sensitive test is needed.

Who uses ISO 8067:2026?

ISO 8067:2026 is used by testing laboratories, foam manufacturers, quality-control teams, and technical buyers who need a common tear-strength method for flexible cellular polymeric materials. It is also relevant where results may be used for referee testing, comparison between laboratories, or product specification work.

What changed in ISO 8067:2026 from the previous edition?

ISO 8067:2026 is the fourth edition and replaces ISO 8067:2018. The stated technical change is the addition of information on the location and number of surfaces with skin in Clause 10.

Which standards are used with ISO 8067:2026?

  • ISO 1923 - provides the method used to measure the thickness of the test piece.
  • ISO 7500-1:2018 - provides the calibration and verification requirements for the force-measuring system of the tensile-testing machine.
  • ISO/TR 9272 - Annex A says the precision data were calculated according to this technical report.

What does the ISO 8067:2026 document contain?

ISO 8067:2026 contains the apparatus requirements, specimen geometry, conditioning rules, test speeds, and result calculation needed to run the tear-strength test in a consistent way. It includes figures for the trouser test piece, the angle test piece die, the predominant foam-rise direction, and the test arrangement. The document also gives the expression of results and the list of items to include in the test report.

Annex A provides comparative trial results and precision data for the two test-piece types. It includes tables of test results and precision figures, and it explains how repeatability and reproducibility should be interpreted for these two methods.
