Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures - Test methods - Testing of anchoring products by the pull-out method

This European Standard specifies the conditions for carrying out a pull-out test on a reinforcing steel bar (rebar) anchored in a concrete block.
The test applies to products based on hydraulic binders or synthetic resins or mixtures of these. It does not include those products intended to be used as grout around tendons used for the prestressing of concrete

Overview

EN 1881:2006 is a European Standard developed by CEN focusing on products and systems used for protecting and repairing concrete structures. Specifically, this standard specifies the test method for evaluating anchoring products by the pull-out method. It targets materials such as those based on hydraulic binders, synthetic resins, or their mixtures used to anchor reinforcing steel bars (rebars) in concrete blocks.

This standard excludes grout products intended for prestressing tendons. The method provides essential guidelines for assessing the pull-out resistance of anchoring products, ensuring their performance and reliability in structural applications.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
EN 1881:2006 applies to testing the pull-out strength of rebars anchored in concrete blocks using various anchoring products. The concrete used is type C (0.40) according to EN 1766, with testing environments controlled for temperature and humidity.

  • Test Principle
The method involves applying controlled tensile load on an anchored rebar in a concrete test block while measuring load and displacement to determine anchorage performance.

  • Test Setup and Apparatus
    Essential equipment includes:

    • Concrete mixers and moulds for block preparation (minimum dimensions 400 × 400 × 250 mm)
    • Rotary percussive or diamond drills for hole creation
    • Ribbed steel rebars compliant with EN 10080
    • Tensile testing machines capable of accurately measuring load and displacement
    • Environmental control chambers maintaining standard laboratory climate conditions
  • Test Preparation
Detailed steps for the production and curing of concrete blocks, drilling appropriate holes, and conditioning concrete surfaces either as dry or wet prior to anchoring.

  • Anchoring Procedure
The standard outlines the mixing, placing, and positioning of anchoring products and rebars strictly following manufacturer instructions, emphasizing the importance of consistent conditions and proper storage before testing.

  • Testing Process
Controlled load application at a prescribed rate until failure, with ongoing capture of load/displacement data. It includes guidance for testing bars installed in different orientations.

  • Reporting Requirements
The test report must comprehensively document product identification, environmental conditions, preparation methods, loading specifics, failure modes, and any deviations from the standard.

Applications

EN 1881:2006 is instrumental in ensuring the quality and durability of anchoring products used in:

  • Concrete repair and structural strengthening
Evaluating products designed to secure rebars in structural retrofitting and rehabilitation projects.

  • New concrete construction anchoring
Verifying the performance of hydraulic or resin-based anchoring materials used in reinforcing concrete members.

  • Quality assurance and compliance testing
Assisting manufacturers and testing laboratories in validating product performance to meet regulatory and safety requirements.

  • Research and development
Supporting product innovation by providing standardized pull-out test methodology.

This standard supports the concrete construction industry by providing confidence in anchoring systems critical to the longevity and safety of concrete structures.

Related Standards

EN 1881:2006 references several related standards fundamental to its implementation, including:

  • EN 206-1 – Concrete: Specification, performance, production, and conformity, defining concrete types and standards for test specimens.
  • EN 1766 – Products and systems for protection and repair of concrete structures: Reference concretes for testing.
  • EN 10080 – Steel for the reinforcement of concrete: Specifications for weldable reinforcing steel.
  • EN 12390-2 – Testing hardened concrete: Procedures for making and curing concrete specimens.

These related standards form the framework ensuring uniformity, accuracy, and reliability across testing and application of anchoring products in concrete structures.

By adhering to EN 1881:2006, engineers, manufacturers, and testing agencies can rigorously assess anchoring products to guarantee safe, effective structural repairs and reinforcements, driving improved longevity and resilience in concrete infrastructure.
