Overview

EN 13634:2017 - published by CEN - is the European standard for protective footwear for motorcycle riders. It applies to motorcycle boots intended for on‑ and off‑road riding and specifies requirements and test methods covering protection performance, ergonomics, innocuousness (chemical safety), mechanical properties, marking and user information. The standard defines key performance features with two levels (e.g., Level 1 / Level 2) so manufacturers and users can match protection to riding style and risk.

Key Topics

  • Scope and purpose: Protective footwear for motorcycle riders for use while riding motorcycles (on and off road).
  • Protection requirements: Impact abrasion resistance, impact cut resistance, upper height and transverse rigidity of the whole footwear. Two performance levels allow higher protection where needed.
  • Optional features: Impact protection for ankle/shin, water penetration resistance, fuel‑oil resistance of outsole, slip resistance, breathable/permeable uppers, insole/insock water absorption/desorption.
  • Innocuousness / chemical safety: pH value, Chromium(VI) content and colour fastness requirements for uppers and linings.
  • Mechanical properties: Outsole thickness, cleat height, abrasion resistance, hydrolysis resistance and interlayer bond strength.
  • Ergonomics and sizing: Ergonomic checks and size verification to ensure control of motorcycle controls is not compromised.
  • Marking & user information: Mandatory marking (including upper height) and instructions for correct use, maintenance and limitations.
  • Test methods referenced: Specific test procedures such as transverse rigidity measurement and impact energy protection of ankle/shin, as well as referenced laboratory methods (see Related Standards).

Applications

  • For manufacturers and designers of motorcycle boots to develop products that meet European safety expectations and to choose appropriate protection levels for different rider segments (commuter, touring, sport, off‑road).
  • For testing laboratories and certification bodies conducting conformance testing and issuing CE‑related documentation.
  • For procurement teams and fleet operators specifying protective footwear for riders and couriers.
  • For retailers and consumers to compare boots based on standardized protection metrics and manufacturer claims.

Related Standards (if applicable)

EN 13634:2017 references and aligns with several normative standards used for test methods and related PPE:

  • EN ISO 20344 (test methods for footwear) and EN ISO 20345 (safety footwear)
  • EN 13595‑2 / EN 13595‑4 (impact abrasion / cut resistance methods)
  • EN 1621‑1 (limb impact protectors)

The EN 13634:2017 standard provides a comprehensive framework for protective footwear specifically designed for motorcycle riders engaged in both on and off-road activities. The scope of this standard is crucial as it addresses a niche market that requires specialized gear to enhance safety and comfort during riding. One of the primary strengths of this standard is its emphasis on protection. It sets rigorous requirements for the protective features of footwear, ensuring that essential areas such as the toes, heels, and ankle are adequately shielded from impacts and abrasions. This focus on mechanical properties is particularly relevant, given the inherent risks associated with motorcycle riding. Additionally, the standard includes detailed specifications for ergonomic characteristics, which are paramount in providing comfort during long rides. By addressing factors such as fit, flexibility, and weight, EN 13634:2017 ensures that the footwear not only protects but also promotes the rider's mobility and overall riding experience. Innocuousness is another significant aspect outlined in the standard, ensuring that the materials used in the protective footwear are safe for users. This aspect is crucial as it prioritizes rider health and durability of the footwear over time. Furthermore, the inclusion of marking and information for users enhances the usability of the footwear. Clear labels and user instructions contribute to informed purchasing decisions, allowing motorcycle riders to select the right protective footwear that meets their needs while adhering to safety standards. The document also outlines the appropriate test methods, which serve to validate the performance of the footwear against the set requirements. These test methods ensure that manufacturers adhere to a consistent quality standard, thereby increasing the reliability and trustworthiness of protective gear in the market. Overall, the relevance of EN 13634:2017 cannot be overstated as it provides a standardized approach to safety in motorcycle riding. This standard not only enhances rider protection but also fosters a culture of safety and innovation in protective footwear, making it an essential reference for manufacturers aiming to produce high-quality, protective footwear for motorcycle riders.
