- Abstract
This part of IEC 61076-2 covers shielded and unshielded, free and fixed circular connectors without breaking capacity (COC) for power, signal and data transmission, and specifies the common dimensions, mechanical, electrical and transmission characteristics and environmental requirements as well as test specifications, respectively.
NOTE 1 As all the connectors described in this document are equipped with shielded data transmission portions, the attribute “shielded” or “unshielded” refers to the additional presence or lack of a shielded connector body.
The connectors described in this document are equipped with an M12, M17, M23 or M40 screw-locking mechanism or a quick-locking mechanism with a size derived from those.
Fixed and rewirable connectors with male or female contacts, mateable with Mxx screw- or quick-locking plugs.
This document provides multiple mating interfaces each of which is associated with a coding preventing the mating of incompatible male and female connectors. The individual codings differ by their numbers of ways, pin layouts and thicknesses, and thus by their power and data transmission capabilities. These codings are referred to as “Type x” where ‘x’ represents an Arabic number.
The connectors described in this document are intended to be used in one-cable automation applications which require various combinations and levels of power up to 600 V AC/ DC and up to 70 A, and either signal or data transmission, or both, with frequencies up to 600 MHz.
NOTE 2 The requirements (or information) described in this document facilitate data transmission through the following Ethernet media systems as defined in IEEE 802.3:

EN IEC 61076-2-117:2026 is an IEC detail specification adopted in the European system by CENELEC for shielded and unshielded circular connectors M12 to M40. It specifies the interface, coding, electrical and transmission characteristics, mechanical features, environmental performance and test program for free and fixed connectors used in power, signal and data transmission up to 600 MHz.
It is aimed at connector manufacturers, equipment designers, test laboratories, quality teams and buyers who need a defined mating interface and a common qualification basis for these connectors.
What does EN IEC 61076-2-117:2026 specify?
EN IEC 61076-2-117:2026 covers shielded and unshielded, free and fixed circular connectors without breaking capacity (COC) for power, signal and data transmission. It defines the common dimensions, characteristics and test requirements for M12, M17, M23 and M40 connector families.
The document also defines multiple mating interfaces with codings that prevent incorrect mating of incompatible male and female connectors. In practice, that means the connector type, pin layout and coding have to match the intended power and data function before a design can be released.
The document is organized into these main clauses:
- Scope
- Normative references
- Terms and definitions
- Technical information
- Dimensional information
- Characteristics
- Tests and test schedule
What are the key requirements of EN IEC 61076-2-117:2026?
EN IEC 61076-2-117:2026 ties together the mechanical interface, coding, electrical performance, transmission behavior and environmental robustness. The key point for users is that compliance is not just a matter of fit - the connector also has to meet the specified electrical, signal integrity and test requirements.
Coding, mating and connector styles
Clause 5.2 defines the coding system. The codings separate connector variants by contact layout and contact size so that incompatible connectors cannot be mated by mistake. For a project team, this is the first selection step: choose the coding that matches the required mix of power, signal and data contacts.
Clause 5.3 lists the fixed and free connector styles. The document covers straight and right-angled fixed connectors, single-hole and flange mounting, and free connectors that are rewirable or non-rewirable. It also includes versions with screw-locking, quick-locking or locking nuts, which matters when you need a serviceable cable assembly or a specific mounting method on the equipment.
Dimensions, interface geometry and gauges
Clause 5.4 gives the interface dimensions for M12, M17, M23 and M40, including the mating dimensions for the different codings and connector sides. Clause 5.5 defines engagement direction and mated-and-locked dimensions, so the installed envelope can be checked during enclosure and harness design.
Clause 5.6 gives the gauges used for sizing and retention-force checks. In practice, these gauges are the control tools for production inspection, incoming quality and type testing, because they verify that contacts and retention features are built to the intended interface dimensions.
Electrical, climatic and transmission performance
Clause 6.3 classifies connectors into climatic categories and links them to performance levels. The document states that when different performance levels are mated, the lower level applies. That matters when assemblies from different sources are combined in the field.
Clause 6.4 defines the electrical limits. It covers rated voltage, voltage proof, current-carrying capacity, current rating, contact resistance, input-to-output d.c. resistance, insulation resistance and nominal impedance. The standard’s nominal impedance is 100 Ω, so signal and data designs must be checked against that target as well as against power loading.
Clause 6.5 sets the transmission-performance requirements. It covers insertion loss, return loss, NEXT, FEXT, TCL, TCTL, transfer impedance, coupling attenuation, PS ANEXT, PS AFEXT and propagation delay. For users, this means the connector has to be qualified for signal integrity, not only for continuity, because the interface is intended for data transmission up to 600 MHz.
Clause 6.6 defines the mechanical characteristics. It includes IP degree of protection, mechanical operation, effectiveness of connector coupling devices, insertion and withdrawal forces, polarizing method, vibration and shock. In practice, this is what you use to judge whether a connector fits the installation environment, can survive repeated mating and stays locked under vibration.
Test program and qualification route
Clause 7 sets the specimen arrangement, preconditioning, test procedures and test schedules. The document uses a preliminary sequence and then separate test groups for dynamic/climatic, mechanical endurance, electrical load, chemical resistivity, connection methods, electrical transmission, transfer impedance/coupling attenuation and current-carrying capacity.
That matters because qualification is staged. A manufacturer or lab has to test mated connector sets, keep the same pairs together for resistance measurements where required, and follow the specified sequence to claim compliance.
What terms does EN IEC 61076-2-117:2026 define?
- COC - Connectors without breaking capacity; the connector is treated as a non-load-breaking connector.
- MPL - Mating performance level; the document classifies connectors by this level.
- PE - The contact used for the PE function in the codings and contact assignments.
- FE - The contact used for the FE function where the coding requires it.
- NEXT - Near-end cross talk; a signal-integrity measure for coupling between pairs near the source end.
- FEXT - Far-end cross talk; a signal-integrity measure for coupling at the far end.
- TCL - Transverse conversion loss; used to assess common-mode conversion behavior.
- TCTL - Transverse conversion transfer loss; another measure of unwanted mode conversion.
Who uses EN IEC 61076-2-117:2026?
EN IEC 61076-2-117:2026 is used by connector manufacturers who design and rate M12, M17, M23 and M40 products. It is also used by equipment makers that specify panel interfaces, cable assemblies and mating constraints for automation and electronics systems.
Test laboratories and certification teams use it to set up dimensional checks, electrical tests, transmission tests and environmental qualification. Quality managers and buyers use it to compare offered parts against a common interface and performance baseline, especially where one-cable automation, power and data share the same connector family.
What changed in EN IEC 61076-2-117:2026 from the previous edition?
EN IEC 61076-2-117:2026 is presented as the next-stage IEC detail specification for this connector family and is identified in the document as being based on IEC 61076-2-117 Ed. 1. The document also states that it replaces the committee draft references 48B/3093/CD and 48B/3120A/CC.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which
may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent
the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at https://patents.iec.ch. IEC
shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
