EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026 is the CENELEC European Standard for automatic electrical controls, part 2-24, covering displacement electrical controls. It specifies construction, operation and test requirements for controls used in, on, or in association with household and similar appliances and other equipment using electricity, for AC or DC powered controls within the stated voltage limits. The standard is intended to be used together with EN IEC 60730-1, which supplies the general requirements that this part modifies.
What does EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026 specify?
EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026 specifies particular requirements for displacement electrical controls and explains how this part supplements Part 1. It covers the controls’ inherent safety, functional safety, operating values, operating times and operating sequences where they affect equipment safety.
The scope includes controls that are mechanically or electrically operated and respond to a change of position of the point of action. It excludes automatic electronic controls, and manual switches that are not part of an automatic control are handled by IEC 61058-1-1.
The document is organized into Clauses 1 to 26, plus two annexes and a bibliography. Annex H deals with functional safety, and Annex AA gives guidance for applying displacement electrical controls in real products.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| H | Functional safety requirements, including manufacturing deviation, drift and related checks |
| AA | Guidance for selection, installation and application of displacement electrical controls |
What are the key requirements of EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026?
EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026 is built around declared operating distances, temperatures and cycles, then verifies them by testing. For manufacturers and test labs, that means the declared values are not just descriptive data - they are the values used to select the control and judge compliance.
Clause 4.3.4.5.1 requires controls with two or more sensing positions for multiple functions to be tested one sensing position at a time. In practice, each function has to be checked separately, not only as part of a combined setup.
Clause 5 and Table 1 define the technical information that has to be declared, including the purpose of the control, mounting-surface temperature limits, number of automatic cycles, type 2 action, travel distances and maximum ambient temperature. This matters because the end-product manufacturer needs these values to install the control correctly and to verify that the application stays within the declared limits.
Clause 9.3.101 treats a displacement electrical control with an integrated protective function as a protective control. For a position limiter, once the self-locking travel distance is reached, it must not reconnect automatically when the force drops, unless it is manually reset. That is the safety feature that prevents an unintended return to a hazardous state.
Clause 9.4.3 makes the disconnection travel distance a type 2 action and limits its deviation from the declared value to ±5%. The practical effect is that the operating point has to be controlled tightly, because the switch action is part of the safety behavior.
Clause 16.5 and Clause 19.3.1 define heating-test conditions for the switch head and mounting surface. The control is tested in an appropriate heating apparatus, with special attention to draft-free conditions and to the declared temperature limits. For products mounted on hot surfaces, this confirms that the control can operate at the temperatures it will actually see.
Clause 19 defines endurance testing in terms of cycles for disconnection action and self-locking action, and it distinguishes the cycle count for different automatic actions. For position regulators and position limiters, the clause adds dedicated tests for limit travel distance and self-locking travel distance, so durability is checked at the same operating point that matters in use.
Clause 23 and Clause 25 keep electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) emission and immunity in scope. That means the control still has to behave properly in the electrical environment of the end product, not only as a mechanical device.
Annex H adds functional-safety checks for manufacturing deviation and drift. It uses fixture-based measurements, micrometer readings and simple indicator circuits to confirm that travel distances remain stable after repeated operation. For quality control, this is the part that links the declared distances to measurable test results.
What terms does EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026 define?
Displacement electrical control - an automatic control in which the point of action changes position because the container is displaced by a pressure change.
Position limiter - a displacement electrical control intended to keep a position below one particular value during normal operation, with possible adjustment by the end-product manufacturer.
Position regulator - a cycling displacement electrical control intended to keep a position between two particular values during normal operation, with possible adjustment by the end-product manufacturer.
Free position - the initial state of the point of action before displacement begins.
Disconnection position - the position at which the contact is disconnected from the circuit by the action mechanism under external force.
Self-locking position - the position at which the self-locking mechanism operates and further displacement can continue after the contact has disconnected.
Reset position - the position where the disconnected contact reconnects when displacement is reduced.
Disconnection travel distance - the distance between the free position and the disconnection position.
Who uses EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026?
EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026 is used by control manufacturers, appliance manufacturers, end-product manufacturers, test laboratories and conformity-assessment teams. They use it when designing, selecting, testing and documenting displacement electrical controls.
It is relevant to household and similar appliances, and the document’s examples show pressure-cooker applications. Quality managers and buyers use it to check whether a control matches the required travel distances, temperatures, cycle life and safety behavior for the intended appliance.
Which standards are used with EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026?
EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026 is intended to be used with EN IEC 60730-1, which provides the general requirements that this part supplements or modifies. Annex ZA of EN IEC 60730-1 applies to the European version.
IEC 61058-1-1 is referenced for manual switches that are not part of an automatic control. IEC 60730-2-6 and IEC 60730-2-9 are named in the bibliography notes as related parts for automatic pressure sensing controls and temperature sensing controls. Together, these references show where adjacent control types are handled.
What does the EN IEC 60730-2-24:2026 document contain?
The document contains a requirements table, test methods, figures and application guidance that support design verification and product testing. Table 1 lists the technical information that has to be declared and how it can be provided.
Figures 101 to 103 show the control positions, travel distances, a measurement drawing and an example test fixture. These figures support the practical measurement of disconnection, self-locking, limit and reset travel distances.
Annex H describes how to measure drift and verify stability after cycling, including the test setup, sensing circuit and temperature conditions. Annex AA adds installation examples and selection guidance, including two mounting modes and advice on matching pressure, temperature and current ratings to the appliance.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
