Overview
EN 60335-2-59:2003/A1:2006 is a CENELEC amendment to the European adoption of IEC 60335-2-59, the particular safety requirements for household and similar electrical insect killers. It updates EN 60335-2-59:2003 and was approved in 2006. The amendment clarifies how radiation-related hazards (notably UV) are assessed, replaces a previous UV figure with a numeric Table 101 of wavelength weighting factors, and updates wording on electromagnetic effects and abnormal operating conditions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Particular safety requirements for electric insect killers as part of the IEC/EN 60335 series for household appliances.
- Radiation hazards: The amendment revises the treatment of UV radiation and related risks:
- Removes the previous UV action-spectrum figure and introduces Table 101 – weighting factors for different wavelengths (250–400 nm) used to compute effective irradiance.
- Specifies that irradiance is measured after lamp radiation has stabilized, and effective irradiance is calculated using the table’s weighting factors (interpolate for intermediate wavelengths).
- Electromagnetic and abnormal conditions: Text was updated to state the standard covers abnormal situations expected in practice and considers how electromagnetic phenomena can affect safe operation.
- Implementation and conformity: The amendment replaces prior national deviations and aligns EN text with IEC amendment 1:2006; national adoption and withdrawal dates are specified by CENELEC.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of electric insect killers: design for safety, specify UV sources, and verify compliance with radiation and electrical safety requirements.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies: apply the updated irradiance measurement and weighting-factor method to evaluate devices.
- Product safety engineers and designers: assess abnormal operating conditions, electromagnetic compatibility impacts, and hazard mitigation (shielding, interlocks).
- Regulatory authorities and importers/retailers: confirm products meet European safety expectations under EN/IEC conformity regimes.
- Compliance managers: update technical files and declarations of conformity to reflect the A1 amendment.
