(Amendment)Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-38: Particular requirements for commercial electric griddles and griddle grills
- Abstract
This standard deals with the safety of electrically operated commercial griddles and griddle grills, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral and 480 V for other appliances. These appliances are not intended for household and similar purposes. They are used for commercial processing of food in areas not open to the public, for example in kitchens of restaurants, canteens, hospitals and in commercial enterprises such as bakeries and butcheries. The electrical part of appliances making use of other forms of energy is also within the scope of this standard.

prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prA1:2026 is a CENELEC draft amendment for the safety of commercial electric griddles and griddle grills. It updates the European requirements for electrically operated commercial cooking appliances used for food processing in back-of-house areas such as restaurant kitchens, canteens, hospitals, bakeries and butcheries. The draft is meant to be read together with prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026 and prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prAA:2026.
What does prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prA1:2026 specify?
prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prA1:2026 specifies additional safety requirements for commercial electric griddles and griddle grills. It covers appliances used in commercial food processing, not household and similar use, and it also includes the electrical part of appliances that use other forms of energy.
The scope is tied to the appliance type and its intended setting. In practice, that means the standard is for equipment installed and used in commercial kitchens and other non-public food-preparation areas, where construction, guarding and movement hazards matter as much as cooking performance.
The amendment is organized as a short change document. It touches the scope in Clause 1, a definition in Clause 3, heating in Clause 11, charging of metal-ion batteries in Clause 12, stability and mechanical hazards in Clause 20, and it deletes Annex B.
What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prA1:2026?
The amendment mainly updates how the appliance is classified, guarded and checked for mechanical safety. It also redirects battery-related matters back to Part 1 where that is now the intended basis.
- Scope update for supply type - Clause 1 adds direct current (DC) supplied appliances to the scope wording and removes the battery-operated item that was listed separately. In practice, manufacturers should treat DC-supplied versions as covered by the same safety framework.
- Definition and heating text revised - Clause 3.1.9 and Clause 11.7 are both modified. This means the underlying wording used for interpreting the appliance and its heating-related safety provisions is updated, so conformity work should use the amended text rather than the earlier wording.
- Charging of metal-ion batteries - Clause 12 now states that the corresponding clause of Part 1 applies. In practice, battery-charging safety for these appliances is handled through the base standard instead of a special Part 2-38 rule.
- Protective parts must stay effective - Clause 20.2 strengthens the treatment of protective enclosures, guards and similar parts. They must either be non-detachable or interlocked, and they need adequate mechanical strength. This matters because covers and guards must not become loose hazards during use or servicing.
- Automatic movement must not create a hazard - New Clause 20.101 addresses automatic opening and closing of the lid and automatic movement of the heating plates. The movement must be checked for hazard at the front edge during closure, using pressure, force and kinetic-energy limits. This is the main anti-pinch and anti-crush check for motorized designs.
- Important exemptions and clarification - Clause 20.101 says automated heating plates above a certain working temperature are exempted, and a hold-to-run device is not treated as automatic operation. In practice, designers still need to assess the control mode and the real movement risk, not just the label on the control.
- Battery annex removed - Annex B is deleted so that Part 1 applies without modification for battery-operated appliances, separable batteries and detachable batteries. That simplifies the structure and pushes the battery rules back to the base document.
What terms does prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prA1:2026 define?
- Commercial electric griddles and griddle grills - The appliance type covered by the standard, used for commercial food processing rather than household cooking.
- Direct current (DC) - A supply type now explicitly included in the scope, so DC-powered versions are treated within the same safety framework.
- Metal-ion batteries - The battery type addressed in Clause 12, where charging safety is taken from Part 1.
- Hold-to-run device - A control that keeps movement going only while the operator continues to actuate it; Clause 20.101 says this is not automatic operation.
- Battery-operated appliances - Appliances powered by batteries, which are handled through the deleted Annex B and the Part 1 arrangement.
Who uses prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prA1:2026?
Manufacturers of commercial cooking appliances use this amendment when designing griddles and griddle grills, especially motorized or battery-related variants. Test laboratories and certification bodies use it to check guarding, movement safety and the correct application of Part 1 for battery charging.
Quality managers, compliance engineers and technical buyers use it to judge whether a product line matches the intended commercial kitchen safety route. It is also relevant for suppliers to restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries and butcheries that need equipment for non-public food-preparation areas.
What changed in prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prA1:2026 from the previous edition?
prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prA1:2026 is the amendment text based on IEC 60335-2-38/A1:2025 and intended to modify prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026. The changes stated in the document are the scope update for DC supply, the revision of Clause 3.1.9 and Clause 11.7, the new treatment of charging of metal-ion batteries, the added hazard check for automatic lid and heating-plate movement, and the deletion of Annex B.
Which standards are used with prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prA1:2026?
- prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026 - The main European standard this amendment modifies.
- prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prAA:2026 - A related draft amendment that the foreword says this document is read with.
- Part 1 - The base standard used where Clause 12 sends battery-charging requirements back to the general rules.
What does the prEN IEC 60335-2-38:2026/prA1:2026 document contain?
The document contains amendment text rather than a full rewritten standard. Its technical content is concentrated in the revised scope, the updated wording in Clauses 3 and 11, the Part 1 reference in Clause 12, the new mechanical-hazard checks in Clause 20, and the deletion of Annex B.
Clause 20.101 provides the procedure for checking automatic lid and heating-plate movement against hazard at the appliance front edge. That makes the document useful for design verification, safety testing and conformity assessment of moving commercial cooking equipment.
The foreword also places the amendment in the CENELEC enquiry process and identifies it as the draft version of the IEC amendment text.
