Overview
EN 61067-2:1997 (CLC; aligned with IEC 61067-2:1995) specifies the methods of test for loomstate glass and glass–polyester fibre woven tapes used as electrical insulating and technical textile materials. This Part 2 standard defines the sampling, conditioning, apparatus and step‑by‑step procedures to measure physical, chemical and electrical properties so products can be verified against the general requirements in Part 1 and the material specifications in Part 3.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Sampling & conditioning: Test pieces and rolls are taken at random and conditioned under IEC 212 standard ambient conditions (relative humidity and temperature ranges specified).
- Count of warp ends and picks: Procedures for counting ends per 10 mm width and picks per unit length (including note for two threads = one pick for some types).
- Thickness measurement: Method largely based on ISO 5084 - five rolls, multiple measurements at selvedges and centre, using a presser foot at defined pressure (100 kPa in dispute cases).
- Width measurement: Average results from two measurements on five randomly selected rolls, made with minimal tension.
- Residue on ignition (glass content): Drying at 80 °C, then ignition in a muffle furnace at 625 °C for 2 h to determine inorganic (glass) fraction; sample mass ≥ 5 g.
- Tensile strength: Based on ISO 5081 with modifications - five test pieces, 200 mm gauge length, specific end preparation (impregnation/adhesion to paper), constant traverse rate, report central value as N per 10 mm width.
- Effect of heating in air: Ageing procedures for Types 1–3 (e.g., 24 h at 250 °C ±10 K or 150 °C ±5 K depending on type) followed by tensile or width re‑measurement and reporting of percentage change.
- Electrical conductivity of aqueous extract: Extraction and conductivity measurement of boiled water extracts (sample ~5–7 g), test apparatus and calculation method specified to assess leachable ionic contaminants.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of glass fibre and glass–polyester woven tapes for electrical insulation and composite reinforcements use EN 61067-2 for quality control and product certification.
- Independent testing laboratories and R&D departments apply these methods of test to validate material performance (tensile strength, dimensional stability, glass content, extract conductivity).
- Procurement engineers, specification writers and compliance officers in electrical equipment, transformer, motor, aerospace and PCB industries reference this standard when specifying insulating tapes and verifying supplier claims.

SPECIFICATION FOR GLASS AND GLASS POLYESTER
FIBRE WOVEN TAPES
Part 2: Methods of test
FOREWORD
1) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
3) In order to promote international unification, the IEC expresses the wish that all National Committees
should adopt the text of the IEC recommendation for their national rules in so far as national conditions will
permit. Any divergence between the IEC recommendation and the corresponding national rules should, as
far as possible, be clearly indicated in the latter.
This part of International Standard IEC 1067 has been prepared by Sub-Committee 15C:

SPECIFICATION FOR GLASS AND GLASS POLYESTER
FIBRE WOVEN TAPES
Part 2: Methods of test
1 General
1.1
Scope
This International Standard specifies requirements for loomstate, continuous filament
tapes woven on conventional or shuttleless looms from either glass fibres or a combina-
tion of glass and polyester fibres.
This part of IEC 1067 gives methods of test to demonstrate compliance with the general
requirements of Part 1 and the specific requirements of Part 3.
1.2 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this
text, constitute provisions of this International Standard. At the time of publication of
this normative document, the editions indicated were valid. All normative documents are
subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this International Standard
are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the
normative documents indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of
currently valid International Standards.
IEC 212: 1971, Standard conditions for use prior to and during the testing of solid elec-
trical insulating materials.
ISO 5081: 1977, Textiles - Woven fabrics - Determination of breaking strength and
elongation (Strip method).
ISO 5084: 1977, Textiles - Determination of thickness of woven and knitted fabrics (other
than textile floor coverings).
2 Tests
2.1
Determination of number of warp ends
The ends shall be counted across the full width of the tape under ordinary room conditions
and divided by the nominal width to obtain the ends per 10 mm of nominal width.
2.2 Determination of number of picks
The picks shall be counted over not less than a 20 mm length of tape under ordinary room
conditions and the average value shall be calculated from not less than three individual
tests made at three different places along the tape.
NOTE - For types 2 and 3, two threads equal one pick (see the definition of "pick" in Part 1 of IEC 1067).

2.3 Determination of thickness
modified as
The thickness shall be generally determined by the method given in ISO 5084,
below:
2.3.1 Test pieces
Take five rolls of tape selected at random.
2.3.2 Conditioning
45 % to 75 %
Condition the rolls in an atmosphere of relative humidity within the range
as in IEC 212 and then measure the
and with a temperature between 15 °C and 35 °C
thickness under these conditions.
2.3.3 Test apparatus
Use test apparatus complying with that described in ISO 5084.
2.3.4 Test procedure
Clean the surfaces of the reference plate and the presser-foot. Adjust the instrument to
kPa. In case of dispute, a deadweight tester shall be
provide a pressure of 100 kPa to 200
used and the pressure shall be 100 kPa.
Separate the parallel plates and place an uncreased part of the test piece without tension
in contact with the reference plate.
Gently reduce the distance between the reference plate and the presser-foot until contact
is made with the tape and note the reading of the gauge immediately after the easily
visible movement of the pointer has ceased.
On each of the five selected rolls, make four measurements at random, one at each of the
selvedges and two between the selvedges
