Overview
EN 61754-8:1997 (published by CLC) specifies the standard mechanical interface dimensions and basic mechanical features for the CF08 connector family used in fibre optic systems. Identical in intent to IEC 61754-8:1996, this standard defines the single-way plug form, mating adapter and receptacle interfaces so that CF08 connectors are mechanically intermateable and consistent across manufacturers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Connector family definition: CF08 is a single-way plug connector using a conical ferrule that butts against a 4 mm diameter sphere (or equivalent) to establish optical contact.
- Coupling and mechanics: The connector employs a push–pull coupling mechanism, a ferrule spring-loaded along the optical axis, and a single male key to orient and limit relative rotation.
- Defined interfaces:
- Interface 8-1: Plug connector interface
- Interface 8-2: Adapter for plug/adapter/plug configurations
- Interface 8-3: Receptacle for plug/receptacle/optical component configurations
- Dimensional specifications: Detailed limit dimensions and tolerances are given in tabulated form (plug dimensions in Table 1; adapter/receptacle dimensions in Table 2) and illustrated in figures for accurate mechanical design.
- Mating conditions and performance: The standard specifies ferrule compression behavior when mated (compression force range 8 N to 18 N), permitted axial movement (ferrule can enter at least 0.15 mm when mated; free plug can extend at least 0.35 mm), and options for adapter designs (elastomeric contact element vs. non-elastomeric for large-core fibres).
- Options and notes: Special provisions for fibres with core diameter >400 µm (specific geometric allowances) and guidance on elastomeric versus non-elastomeric adapter designs are included.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Connector and component manufacturers: to design CF08 plugs, adapters and receptacles that are mechanically interchangeable and compliant.
- System integrators and OEMs: for specifying compatible connector hardware in fibre optic modules, transceivers and passive optical components.
- Test labs and quality assurance: to verify dimensional conformity, mating force, and mechanical fit during inspection.
- Procurement and standards writers: to ensure interoperability and reduce integration risk by referencing a recognized interface standard.
Practical benefits include reliable mechanical alignment, consistent optical mating, simplified sourcing, and reduced risk of incompatibility across suppliers.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identif
