Overview

EN IEC 60335-2-14:2023/A1:2023 is a European standard developed by CLC, focusing on the safety of electric kitchen machines intended for household and similar applications. This amendment specifies additional safety requirements for kitchen machines operating at a rated voltage of no more than 250V. The document aligns with international efforts to promote domestic safety and consumer protection in the use of small electrical appliances, particularly kitchen machines.

The scope of this standard includes power-driven appliances such as food processors, mixers, grinders, and similar devices typically found in residential kitchens. The amendment introduces updates and clarifications regarding safety mechanisms, mechanical stability, and design requirements to ensure the safe operation of kitchen machines across European markets.

Key Topics

  • Electrical Safety: Establishes criteria for limiting risks related to electric shock and overheating in kitchen machines.
  • Mechanical Hazards: Addresses mechanical stability and protection against moving parts, minimizing risk of injury during normal and foreseeable misuse.
  • Design and Construction: Updates details on the construction of components such as grinding screws to ensure safe distances, rounded edges, and protective features.
  • Testing Requirements: Sets forth specific testing protocols to verify compliance with safety aspects, especially regarding mechanical and electrical hazards in kitchen appliances.
  • Exclusions: Clarifies components or designs to which certain test requirements do not apply, improving clarity and consistency for manufacturers and testing bodies.
  • International Alignment: Aligns requirements with IEC 60335-2-14:2016 and its Amendment 1:2019 to harmonize European standards with global best practices.

Applications

The EN IEC 60335-2-14:2023/A1:2023 standard is essential for a wide range of domestic and semi-professional kitchen appliances, including:

  • Food processors
  • Stand mixers and hand mixers
  • Meat grinders and blenders
  • Juicers and choppers
  • Any kitchen machine with moving, grinding, or cutting parts

Practical benefits:

  • Manufacturers: Enables appliance manufacturers to design and produce safer kitchen machines, demonstrating conformity with market requirements for electrical and mechanical safety.
  • Testing laboratories: Provides clear, harmonized criteria for product certification, facilitating access to the European market.
  • Regulators: Assists authorities in enforcing domestic appliance safety regulations, reducing incidents of household injury.
  • Consumers: Provides assurance that certified appliances meet strict European safety standards, promoting trust and reducing risk in the home.

By following this standard and its amendment, manufacturers and stakeholders ensure kitchen machines are built to minimize hazards, support user safety, and comply with evolving regulatory frameworks.
