Overview

prEN IEC 60335-2-47:2026/prA1:2026 is a harmonized European Standard developed by CLC for the safety of commercial electric boiling pans. These appliances, specifically designed for use in professional settings such as restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, and butcheries, are not intended for household use. The standard addresses electrical appliances operating at rated voltages up to 250 V (single-phase, between phase and neutral) and up to 480 V (other appliances).

This standard outlines the particular safety requirements that supplement the general requirements in IEC 60335-1 for commercial-grade boiling pans, ensuring protection for users and maintenance personnel. The document incorporates Amendment 1, introducing updated requirements and modifications relevant to current industry practices and technologies.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability

    • Focuses on commercial electric boiling pans for professional environments.
    • Covers appliances supplied by both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC).
    • Excludes battery-operated boiling pans and consumer household appliances.
  • Safety Requirements

    • Addresses mechanical safety, including stability and prevention of mechanical hazards.
    • Specifies the design and construction of protective enclosures, guards, and handles.
    • Introduces requirements for automatic lid operation to prevent potential hazards.
    • Updates endurance, heating, and battery-related requirements for compliance with modern technologies.
  • Definitions and Technical Modifications

    • Clarifies terms and definitions for consistent application across the industry.
    • Ensures alignment with IEC 60335-1 and other relevant parts of the IEC 60335 series.
    • Adopts updated construction requirements for components such as handles and lids.

Applications

Commercial electric boiling pans regulated by this standard are widely used in:

  • Foodservice establishments: Restaurants and canteens for large-scale food preparation.
  • Institutional kitchens: Hospitals, schools, and catering facilities requiring safe, reliable boiling processes.
  • Specialty commercial enterprises: Bakeries and butcheries needing durable, safe boiling equipment.

Key practical benefits include:

  • Enhanced operational safety: Minimizes risks of mechanical and electrical hazards during regular use and maintenance.
  • Regulatory compliance: Streamlines CE marking and conformity assessments within the EU and internationally.
  • Improved design reliability: Encourages the adoption of robust construction practices that withstand intensive commercial use.

Related Standards

When implementing or assessing compliance with prEN IEC 60335-2-47:2026/prA1:2026, the following related standards should also be considered:

  • IEC 60335-1: Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 1: General requirements
  • Other IEC 60335-2 series standards: Cover specific requirements for different types of commercial and household appliances.
  • ISO/IEC Directives: For procedures and structure on standard development and application.

For professionals and manufacturers in the commercial kitchen appliance industry, adherence to prEN IEC 60335-2-47:2026/prA1:2026 ensures up-to-date safety compliance and supports international acceptance of products. Following these guidelines not only boosts user safety but also facilitates market entry across Europe and other regions adopting IEC standards.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents
