Overview
EN 61629-2:1996, titled Aramid Pressboard for Electrical Purposes - Part 2: Methods of Test, is an international standard published by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization). This standard specifies the test methods applicable to aramid pressboard materials classified under IEC 61629-1. Aramid pressboard is an important insulating material used widely in electrical engineering due to its excellent mechanical strength and electrical insulation properties.
The scope of this standard focuses on ensuring consistent quality and performance verification of aramid pressboard used for electrical purposes through standardized testing procedures.
Key Topics
Test Methods for Aramid Pressboard
The standard outlines the specific procedures to assess the physical and electrical properties of aramid pressboards, essential for evaluating their suitability in electrical insulation applications.Material Conditioning
Conditioning of test specimens is mandatory prior to testing to assure accuracy and repeatability. The standard references IEC 641-2 for conditioning requirements, with additional provisions for specific types of aramid pressboard such as APB-LD, APB, APB-C, and APB-HD.Thickness-Dependent Conditioning Time
For APB-HD aramid pressboards, the conditioning duration varies depending on the nominal thickness, with longer conditioning times required for thicker specimens (e.g., 120 hours for ≤ 2.0 mm, up to 360 hours for > 5.0 mm). This ensures that testing results reflect real-world material performance.Normative References
EN 61629-2 references other key standards including IEC 641-2 (Pressboard and presspaper for electrical purposes – Method of test) and IEC 61629-1 (Definitions, designations, and general requirements for aramid pressboard). These provide a comprehensive framework for understanding and applying the test methods.
Applications
EN 61629-2 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality control engineers involved in the production and validation of aramid pressboard electrical insulation materials. Typical applications include:
Power Transformers
Aramid pressboards are used as insulating barriers and structural supports within transformer windings, where reliable electrical and mechanical performance is critical.Electric Motors and Generators
Ensuring adequate dielectric strength and thermal stability of the insulation under operating conditions prolongs equipment lifespan and reliability.High-Voltage Electrical Equipment
Equipment exposed to elevated electrical stresses benefits from aramid pressboards tested according to these methods, reducing the risk of insulation failure.
Using EN 61629-2 helps stakeholders maintain high standards of electrical insulation reliability, safety, and compliance with international regulations.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic
fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt
with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations
liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.
