Fire hazard testing - Part 7-2: Toxicity of fire effluent - Summary and relevance of test methods

IEC 60695-7-2:2011 gives a brief summary of the test methods that are in common use in the assessment of acute toxic potency, and other toxicity tests. It includes special observations on their relevance to real fire scenarios and gives recommendations on their use. It advises which tests provide toxic potency data that are relevant to real fire scenarios, and which are suitable for use in fire hazard assessment and fire safety engineering. This first edition of IEC 60695-7-2 cancels and replaces the first edition of Technical Report IEC/TR 60695-7-2 published in 2002. It constitutes a technical revision and now has the status of an International Standard. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are listed below:
- editorial changes throughout; expanded normative references;
- revised terms and definitions;
- modifications to "Repeatability and reproducibility" data throughout;
- modifications to "Relevance of test data" throughout;
- modifications to Clause 5;
- new Table 1 and Figure 1;
- introduction of ISO test method in new Subclause 6.6;
- introduction of test method from EN 50305 in new Subclause 6.8;
- revised Annex A and new Table A.1;
- expanded Bibliography.

La CEI 60695-7-2:2011 fournit un bref résumé des méthodes d'essai qui sont d'un usage courant dans l'évaluation du potentiel toxique aigu, et autres essais de toxicité. Elle comprend des observations particulières sur leur pertinence par rapport aux scénarios d'incendies réels, et donne des recommandations sur leur utilisation. Elle indique quels sont les essais fournissant des données de potentiel toxique pertinentes pour les scénarios d'incendies réels, et quels sont ceux qui sont adaptés à l'utilisation dans l'évaluation des dangers d'incendie et l'ingénierie de sécurité incendie. Cette première édition de la CEI 60695-7-2 annule et remplace la première édition du Rapport Technique CEI/TR 60695-7-2 publiée en 2002. Elle constitue une révision technique qui conduit au statut de Norme Internationale. Les principales modifications par rapport à l'édition antérieure sont indiquées ci-dessous:

IEC 60695-1-30:2017 provides guidance for assessing and choosing candidate materials, components or sub-assemblies for making an end product based upon preselection testing.
It describes how preselection provides comparative fire hazard test methods to evaluate the performance of a test specimen and how preselection can be used in the selection of materials, parts, components and sub-assemblies during the design stage of an end product. It further describes how standardized test methods may be used as one part in the decision making processes directed to minimize the fire hazards from electrotechnical equipment. It takes into account the desired reaction to fire properties of the end product, and the possible effects of environmental conditions on the behaviour of the end product.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2008. This edition constitutes a technical revision.

Fire hazard testing - Part 11-5: Test flames - Needle-flame test method - Apparatus, confirmatory test arrangement and guidance

IEC 60695-11-5:2016 is also available as IEC 60695-11-5:2016 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.
IEC 60695-11-5:2016 specifies a needle-flame test to simulate the effect of a small flame which may result from fault conditions, in order to assess the fire hazard by a simulation technique. The results of this test may be used as elements of a fire hazard assessment which takes into account all of the factors which are pertinent to an assessment of the fire hazard of a particular end use. It is applicable to electrotechnical equipment, its sub-assemblies and components and to solid electrical insulating materials or other combustible materials. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2004. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- The scope has been broadened to allow this test method to also simulate the effects of small flames from outside the equipment;
- Propane and butane gas are the specified fuel source with a minimum purity of 95 %;
- A new concept has been added which allows the burner to be moved during the test to avoid dripping material from falling onto the tip of the burner tube;
- The burner tube material is now a referenced source;
- The reference for the copper block material has changed - the ISO publication (ISO 1337) has been withdrawn with no replacement. A new callout is now used and Informative Annex C and a bibliography have been added. This basic safety publication is intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51.

Fire hazard testing - Part 1-10: Guidance for assessing the fire hazard of electrotechnical products - General guidelines

IEC 60695-1-10:2016 provides general guidance with respect to fire hazard testing on how to reduce to a tolerable level the risk of fire and the potential effects of fires involving electrotechnical products. It also serves as a signpost standard to the other guidance publications in the IEC 60695 series. It does not give guidance on the use of fire-resistant compartment boundaries or on the use of detection and suppression systems for the mitigation of fire risk. It describes the relationship between fire risk and the potential effects of fire, and provides guidance to IEC product committees on the applicability of qualitative and quantitative fire tests to the fire hazard assessment of electrotechnical products. Details of the calculation of fire risk are not included in the scope of this document. It emphasises the importance of the scenario approach to fire hazard and risk assessment and discusses criteria intended to ensure the development of technically sound hazard-based fire test methods. It discusses the different types of fire tests, in particular the nature of qualitative and quantitative fire tests. It also describes the circumstances under which it is appropriate for IEC product committees to maintain or develop qualitative fire tests. This standard is intended as guidance to IEC committees, and is to be used with respect to their individual applications. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

IEC 60695-10-3:2016 specifies a mould stress relief distortion test. It is applicable to electrotechnical equipment including parts made from polymeric materials. This test method is intended to evaluate the effects caused by relief of the residual process-induced stress, set in a moulded polymeric assembly of an end product. This stress relief occurs when the sample (energized or not), is exposed to conditioning at a defined temperature for a defined period of time. The test specimen is considered to have satisfactorily withstood the test if, after conditioning to room temperature, it meets defined test criteria. Fire hazard testing - Part 11-20: Test flames - 500 W flame test method

IEC 60695-11-20:2015 describes a test method consisting of two small-scale laboratory test procedures which is intended to compare the burning behaviour of different materials used in electrotechnical products. Vertically oriented bar specimens or horizontally oriented plate test specimens are exposed to a small flame ignition source with a nominal thermal power of 500 W. The test method uses two test specimen configurations to classify material performance. Rectangular bar-shaped test specimens are used to assess ignitability and burning behaviour, and square plate test specimens are used to assess the resistance of the test specimen to burn-through, as defined in 8.3.3. This test method only applies to materials that have been classified as V-0 or V-1 according to IEC 60695-11-10. This test method is only applicable to solid and cellular materials that have an apparent density of more than 250 kg/m3, determined in accordance with ISO 845. The method does not apply to materials that shrink away from the applied flame without igniting due to their thinness. The test method described provides classifications which may be used for quality assurance, the pre-selection of component materials of products, or to verify the required minimum flammability classification of materials used in end products. If used for pre-selection, then positive results shall be obtained at a test specimen thickness which equals the smallest thickness used in the product application. The results obtained provide some information about the behaviour of materials in service, but cannot by themselves assure safe performance in service. This second edition cancels and replaces the consolidated version of IEC 60695-11-20 published in 2003. This edition constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with respect to the first edition are as follows:
- The Part title has been modified to the singular - 500 W flame test method;
- Editorial changes have been made throughout the document for the purpose of aligning IEC 60695-11-10 with IEC 60695-11-20;
- The Introduction has been modified to clarify the description of the test method;
- The Scope has been modified for clarification;
- All occurrences of the term "fixture" have been deleted from the document;
- Preferred thickness values have been added to 7.2 and 7.3;
- 7.4.4: 'Thickness measurement' is now numbered 7.5 to which a new Table 1 - Thickness tolerances has been added;
- New Subclause 8.1.4 'Conditioning of the cotton pad' has been added;
- 8.2.3 clarifies the application of the test flame to distorted specimens;
- Explanatory notes have been added to Figures 5 and 6 and the Bibliography has been updated and references added. This basic safety publication is intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51.
