This document specifies the mechanical strength requirements relating to the front and rear hand-guards of portable hand-held chain-saws for use primarily in forestry and for tree service. It also gives the corresponding test methods.

ISO 6534:2023 - Forestry machinery - Portable chain-saw hand-guards - Mechanical strength - specifies mechanical strength requirements and test methods for the front and rear hand-guards of portable, hand-held chain-saws used primarily in forestry and tree service. This fourth edition (2023) replaces ISO 6534:2007 (with amendment) and adds updated scope, clarified breakage criteria, conditioning instructions and impact-point definitions.

  • Performed with a pendulum hammer (arm length 700 mm ± 5 mm) producing impacts of 10 J ± 0.3 J (high-energy) and 5 J ± 0.2 J (durability blows).

  • Front guard impact at midpoint of effective guard width (per ISO 6533:2020).
  • Rear guard impact at a defined intersection point near throttle/handle; adjusted if within 10 mm of the guard edge.
• Temperature conditioning:
  • Impact tests performed at +40 °C ± 2 °C and −25 °C ± 3 °C; chain-saw conditioned for at least 6 h and tested within 60 s of removal.
  • Durability tests at +20 °C ± 5 °C, conditioned for at least 6 h.
• Durability tests:
  • Repeat 25 blows of 5 J ± 0.2 J at the same defined impact points for front and rear guards.
• Acceptance criteria:
  • Hand-guards shall not break or crack under specified tests.
  • Front guard must not deflect sufficiently to allow the pendulum to swing past.
  • Reinforcing rib fracture on rear guard is acceptable provided the guard surface facing the operator shows no breakage or cracks.
  • For rear hand-guards integrated with fuel tanks, any fuel leakage detected after tests is considered a failure (inspect by holding the saw in specified positions).

— ajout des scies à chaîne pour l'élagage des arbres dans le domaine d'application;
— les exigences concernant la rupture ou les fissures sur les protections des mains ont été clarifiées;
— les instructions sur le conditionnement de la scie à chaîne avant l'essai ont été ajoutées;
— le point d'impact sur la poignée avant et arrière a été clarifié.
