ISO 8216-2:1986
(Main)Petroleum products — Fuels (class F) — Classification — Part 2: Categories of gas turbine fuels for industrial and marine applications
General Information
- Abstract
Establishes the detailed classification, excluding aircraft fuels. Should be read in conjunction with ISO 8216-0. These fuels are for use in industrial gas turbines and gas turbines derived from aviation turbines that are used in static and marine applications. The classification includes only fuels that are liquid under atmospheric pressure and at their normal storage temperatures.

Overview
ISO 8216-2:1986 - "Petroleum products - Fuels (class F) - Classification - Part 2: Categories of gas turbine fuels for industrial and marine applications" defines a detailed classification system for liquid gas-turbine fuels used in industrial (static) and marine installations. It excludes aircraft fuels and is intended to be read together with ISO 8216‑0 (general rules). The standard covers petroleum-derived fuels that are liquid at atmospheric pressure and normal storage temperatures.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and exclusion: Applies only to non‑aviation gas turbine fuels for industrial and marine use; only liquids at normal storage conditions are included.
- Classification structure: Fuel designations use a consistent code format beginning with the prefix ISO-F-, followed by a three‑letter category and a numerical grade (e.g., ISO‑F‑DMT 2 or abbreviated F‑DMT 2).
- First letter: family (D = distillate, R = residual/fuel‑oil).
- Second letter: service type (S = static/industrial, M = marine).
- Third letter: application indicator (T = gas turbine).
- Trailing digit(s) (0–4) provide grade identifiers or observation references; they do not inherently define product property limits.
- Families and sub‑divisions: Distillate families (DST, DMT, etc.) and residual fuel families (RST, RMT, etc.) are used to group fuels of similar refinery origin and typical behavior in turbines.
- Reference to regulatory limits: The standard notes relevant safety/operational constraints (for example, minimum flash‑point considerations for certain DMT categories as identified in maritime safety amendments) and should be used in conjunction with applicable safety regulations.
- Cross‑referencing: Must be read with ISO 8216‑0 for general definitions and rules.
Applications and users
ISO 8216‑2 is practical for:
- Procurement and specifications: Buyers and suppliers specify turbine fuel categories in purchase contracts and fuel delivery documentation.
- Engine manufacturers and OEMs: To determine compatible fuel categories for industrial and marine gas turbines or aero‑derivative engines used in fixed or shipboard installations.
- Fuel testing and quality control labs: For classifying test results against the ISO family and category codes.
- Operators and fleet managers: For fuel selection, storage planning, fuel handling procedures and ensuring compliance with operational safety limits.
- Regulatory and standards professionals: For cross‑referencing fuel classifications with maritime safety and environmental requirements.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through IS0 technical committees. Each member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the IS0 Council. They are approved in accordance with IS0 procedures requiring at
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
International Standard IS0 8216/2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 28,
Petroleum products and lubricants.
Users should note that all International Standards undergo revision from time to time
and that any reference made herein to any other International Standard implies its
latest edition, unless otherwise stated.
