Overview
ISO 1837:2003 - Lifting hooks: Nomenclature defines standard terminology for the various types of hooks used on lifting equipment. Published as the second edition in 2003 (revising ISO 1837:1973), this ISO document establishes a consistent naming convention and visual references (Figures 1–17) so manufacturers, engineers and safety professionals can communicate clearly about hook types, features and configurations.
Key topics
- Scope and purpose
- Provides the official nomenclature (names and illustrations) for hooks used in lifting applications.
- Classification criteria
- Hooks are classified by two principal attributes:
- Method of attachment (for example: shank hook, eye hook, clevis hook, swivel eye hook).
- Shape or defining characteristics and intended use (for example: ramshorn hook, self-locking hook, foundry hook, grab hook).
- The standard notes that some combinations of attachment method and defining characteristics are not used in practice.
- Hooks are classified by two principal attributes:
- Illustrative examples
- Figures 1–17 show typical hook types and nomenclature such as shank hooks with or without latch, eye-type self‑locking hooks, clevis grab hooks, and swivel hooks.
- Context and limitations
- ISO 1837:2003 sets naming conventions only - it does not specify manufacturing dimensions, load capacities or inspection criteria.
Applications
ISO 1837:2003 is useful wherever precise, unambiguous identification of lifting hooks is required:
- Manufacturers: standardize product catalogs, part labeling and technical drawings.
- Design engineers: specify correct hook types in lifting assemblies and rigging plans.
- Procurement and supply chain: ensure ordered parts match intended hook types (e.g., clevis vs eye hook).
- Inspection and maintenance teams: improve clarity in inspection reports, replacement orders and safety documentation.
- Standards writers and trainers: provide a common vocabulary for training, procedures and compliance materials.
Practical benefits include improved interoperability between components, reduced procurement errors, clearer technical communication and better traceability of lifting equipment.
Related standards
ISO 1837:2003 cross-references relevant product and component standards, useful for technical specifications:
- ISO 4779 - Forged steel lifting hooks with point and eye for use with steel chains (grade M(4))
- ISO 7597 - Forged steel lifting hooks for chain grade T(8)
- ISO 8539 - Forged steel lifting components for use with grade T(8) chain

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Avant-propos
votants.
