Petroleum and related products — Determination of the flammability characteristics of fluids in contact with hot surfaces — Manifold ignition test

ISO 20823:2003 specifies a test method to determine the relative flammability of fluids when contacted with a hot metal surface at a fixed temperature, but it is also possible to gauge fluid ignition temperatures by adjustment of the manifold temperature. It is primarily used is to assess the resistance to ignition of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids which are, by definition, difficult to ignite. It may be used with other types of more flammable fluids at lower surface temperatures, but this could significantly increase the hazards of this procedure.

Overview

ISO 20823:2003 specifies the manifold ignition test - a standardized method to determine the relative flammability of fluids when they contact a hot metal surface. The procedure is primarily intended to assess the ignition resistance of fire‑resistant hydraulic fluids, but it can be adapted to evaluate ignition temperatures by adjusting the manifold surface temperature. The standard includes safety guidance: testing more flammable fluids at lower surface temperatures can significantly increase hazards and must be managed accordingly.

Key Topics

  • Test principle: A 10 ml test portion is dispensed as a spray onto a heated simulated manifold and observed for flashing or burning both on the tube and after dripping into a collection tray.
  • Critical conditions: The standard specifies a nominal manifold surface temperature of 700 °C ± 5 °C for baseline tests; temperatures may be adjusted to determine ignition thresholds.
  • Apparatus: A simulated manifold rig with a corrosion‑resistant steel tube (nominal 75 mm outside diameter, sandblasted) and an internal heater is used. Temperature sensors monitor the tube surface near the expected impact area.
  • Dispensing: The test uses a device that measures and dispenses 10 ml ± 0.5 ml at a controlled constant rate over 40–60 s, with the dispenser outlet typically positioned 300 mm above the tube surface.
  • Result categories: Results are reported as I(T) (flash/burn on tube only), I(D) (flashing/burning continues in the tray), or N (no flash or burn - pass).
  • Quality control: Precision cannot be expressed conventionally due to equipment and descriptive outcomes; laboratories are expected to establish in‑house QC using reference fluids.

Applications

The manifold ignition test provides practical value for:

  • Safety evaluation and risk assessment of hydraulic fluids and related petroleum products when exposed to hot surfaces in service.
  • Comparative ranking of fluids by ignition resistance and flammability behavior under simulated manifold conditions.
  • Quality control and material selection for systems where contact with hot metal components is a realistic operating hazard (e.g., industrial hydraulic systems, power‑unit manifolds).

Practical considerations include ensuring the test rig is in a fire‑resistant enclosure with adequate ventilation, following sample preparation rules (sampling per ISO 3170 and mixing for 30 s), and maintaining disciplined cleaning and temperature control procedures between runs.

Related Standards

  • ISO 3170 - Petroleum liquids: manual sampling (referenced for sampling practice).
  • ISO 12922:1999 - Lubricants and hydraulic systems (note cited in ISO 20823 outlining family H specifications).

For laboratories implementing ISO 20823:2003, emphasize controlled dispensing, accurate surface temperature measurement, rigorous safety controls, and development of internal reference checks to ensure repeatable comparative results.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 20823 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 28, Petroleum products and lubricants.

1 Domaine d'application
