Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) - Family H (Hydraulic systems) - Specifications for hydraulic fluids in categories HFAE, HFAS, HFB, HFC, HFDR and HFDU (ISO 12922:2020)

This document specifies the minimum requirements of unused fire-resistant and less flammable hydraulic fluids for hydrostatic and hydrodynamic systems in general industrial applications. It is not intended for use in aerospace or power-generation applications, where different requirements apply. It provides guidance for suppliers and end users of these less hazardous fluids and to the manufacturers of hydraulic equipment in which they are used.
Of the categories covered by ISO 6743-4, which classifies the different types of fluids used in hydraulic applications, only the following are detailed in this document: HFAE, HFAS, HFB, HFC, HFDR and HFDU.
Types HFAE, HFAS, HFB, HFC and HFDR are "fire-resistant" fluids as defined by ISO 5598. Most HFDU fluids, while displaying an improvement in combustion behaviour over mineral oil, fall outside this definition and are more appropriately considered as "less flammable" fluids.

Overview

EN ISO 12922:2020 (ISO 12922:2020) specifies minimum requirements for unused fire-resistant and less flammable hydraulic fluids used in hydrostatic and hydrodynamic systems for general industrial applications. It covers the hydraulic-fluid categories HFAE, HFAS, HFB, HFC, HFDR and HFDU (as classified in ISO 6743-4). The standard is intended for suppliers, end users and manufacturers of hydraulic equipment and provides guidance on selection, testing and basic properties of these safer fluids. Not intended for aerospace or power-generation applications.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and definitions - Clarifies which fluid categories are covered and distinguishes “fire-resistant” (HFAE, HFAS, HFB, HFC, HFDR) from “less flammable” (mostly HFDU) fluids per ISO 5598 vocabulary.
  • Minimum performance requirements - Specifies baseline characteristics that unused fluids must meet for industrial use (e.g., compatibility, stability, corrosion and oxidation behaviour).
  • Sampling and test methods - References standardized test procedures for key properties, including:
    • Water content determination (Karl Fischer; ISO 760 and related methods)
    • Oxidation/ageing tests (TOST procedures for HFC/HFDU references)
    • Corrosion resistance and rust prevention (ISO 4404 series, ISO 7120)
    • Emulsion stability, foaming, pH, anti-wear and FZG scuffing tests (referenced ISO methods)
    • Flammability assessments (spray ignition, wick flame persistence, manifold ignition tests)
  • Design and material considerations - Notes that some fire‑resistant fluids contain water or synthetic chemistries and may require system design changes; elastomer compatibility must be checked (ISO 6072).

Practical applications

  • Selection and specification of hydraulic fluids for industries where fire risk must be reduced (manufacturing plants, material‑handling, mining, steel mills).
  • Procurement and quality control by lubricant suppliers and distributors to meet EN ISO 12922:2020 acceptance criteria.
  • Guidance for hydraulic equipment manufacturers and maintenance engineers on compatibility, system modification needs and testing regimes when using non‑mineral or water‑containing fluids.

Who uses this standard

  • Lubricant and hydraulic fluid manufacturers
  • Hydraulic equipment designers and OEMs
  • Maintenance and reliability engineers
  • Safety managers and procurement teams specifying fire‑resistant/low‑flammability fluids

Related standards

  • ISO 6743-4 (fluid classification)
  • ISO 5598 (vocabulary)
  • ISO 7745 (use guidelines for FR fluids)
  • Test standards referenced in EN ISO 12922:2020 (e.g., ISO 760, ISO 4263 series, ISO 4404 series, ISO 20783)

ISO 12922:2020(E)
Introduction
Hydraulic fluids constitute the largest segment of the industrial lubricant market. Although mineral
oil-based fluids are by far the most widely used type of hydraulic fluid, there are some applications
where the use of these fluids could constitute a fire hazard. In order to reduce the risk to operatives
in such circumstances, fire-resistant or less flammable fluids that increase operator safety have been
developed. However, the following points should be noted.
— Even fire-resistant fluids can ignite at very high temperatures and the flammability behaviour of
the fluids specified in this document covers a very wide range. It is therefore necessary to know the
level of hazard in order to select the appropriate fluid.
— The properties of these fluids can be significantly different to those of conventional mineral oil-based
products. For example, some fire-resistant fluids contain water. It might therefore be necessary to
design the system for their use. It should also not be assumed that synthetic, non-aqueous fluids
can replace mineral oil products without system modifications. Some fluids, for example, are
incompatible with the elastomers used with mineral oils.
To enable the satisfactory operation of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids, it is recommended that this
document is read in conjunction with ISO 7745.
