Fasteners - Ends of parts with external ISO metric thread

ISO 4753:2011 specifies the form and dimensions of ends of parts with external ISO metric screw thread (e.g. bolt, screw and stud ends) recommended for use. They apply to standardized or non-standardized threaded parts. For each end type, a symbol is specified and it is intended that these symbols be used when specifying one of the ends for threaded fasteners.

Overview

ISO 4753:2011 is an essential international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the form and dimensions of ends of parts with external ISO metric screw threads. These parts include common fasteners such as bolts, screws, and studs. This standard provides clear guidelines for both standardized and non-standardized threaded components, ensuring compatibility and interchangeability across various engineering applications worldwide.

The standard defines symbols for each type of fastener end, which facilitates unambiguous specification and communication in technical documentation and manufacturing processes. ISO 4753:2011 is the third edition, incorporating technical revisions that reflect updated best practices in fastener design.

Key Topics

  • External ISO Metric Screw Threads
Focuses on the ends of fasteners featuring externally threaded metric screw threads, covering critical aspects like shape and dimensional requirements.

  • End Types and Symbols
Defines a variety of end forms including as-rolled ends, chamfered ends, rounded ends, flat points, dog points (short and long), cone points (including threaded cone and truncated varieties), cup points, scrape points, and pilot points (flat and truncated cone). Each end type is represented by a standardized symbol for technical clarity.

  • Dimensional Specifications
Provides detailed measurements and tolerances relative to thread pitch and nominal diameter, including key dimensions such as:

    • Radius
    • Lengths of threads and points
    • Angles of cones and chamfers
This ensures fasteners meet requirements for mechanical performance and assembly.
  • Nominal Length Inclusion
Classifies ends into two categories: those included within the nominal length of the fastener, and those added beyond the nominal length, facilitating accurate engineering designs and part specifications.

  • Relevant Normative References
Cross-references related ISO standards such as ISO 225 (symbols and dimensions for fasteners) and ISO 4027 (hexagon socket set screws), ensuring a comprehensive and interconnected fastener standardization framework.

Applications

ISO 4753:2011 is highly valuable in sectors where precise fastener design and interchangeability are critical:

  • Mechanical Engineering
Manufacture and design of machinery, equipment, and tools requiring consistent threaded parts with defined end features.

  • Automotive Industry
Production of bolts and screws with specific end treatments to withstand stress and ensure secure assembly under vibration and mechanical loads.

  • Aerospace and Aviation
Use of fasteners with controlled dimensions to meet stringent safety and reliability requirements.

  • Construction and Infrastructure
Application in structural components where standardization ensures durability and maintenance ease.

  • General Manufacturing
Facilitates global supply chain integration by standardizing threaded fasteners, reducing errors and maintain quality consistency.

Related Standards

  • ISO 225 – Fasteners: Bolts, screws, studs, and nuts – Symbols and dimension descriptions; provides foundational symbolic language referenced by ISO 4753.

  • ISO 4027 – Hexagon socket set screws with cone point; covers specific fastener types complementing the forms defined in ISO 4753.

  • ISO 898 – Mechanical properties of fasteners; often paired with thread and end form standards for complete fastener specification.

  • ISO 261 / ISO 262 – General ISO metric screw thread standards; define thread dimensions that correlate with fastener end forms.

Implementing ISO 4753:2011 ensures fasteners meet internationally recognized criteria for external metric thread ends, promoting efficiency in product development, quality assurance, and global trade. This standard is indispensable for manufacturers, engineers, and quality personnel seeking to guarantee consistency and reliability of threaded fastener components.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 4753 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners, Subcommittee SC 7, Reference
standards.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 4753:1999), which has been technically
revised.

Avant-propos
votants.
