ISO 3410:2026 - Agricultural machinery — Variable-speed V-belts and groove sections of pulleys (Datum system)
ISO 3410:2026 - Machines agricoles — Courroies trapézoïdales pour variateurs de vitesse et profils de gorge des poulies (système de référence)
ISO 3410:2026 is an International Standard published by ISO for agricultural machinery. It specifies the main dimensions of endless variable-speed V-belts and the groove section of the matching fixed- or variable-diameter pulleys, using the datum system, with particular relevance to harvester-thresher machines.
What does ISO 3410:2026 specify?
ISO 3410:2026 specifies the belt sizes, pulley groove geometry, and checking methods needed to make variable-speed V-belt drives interchangeable in agricultural machinery. The document is organized into scope, normative references, terms and definitions, dimensions and tolerances, and measuring and checking.
Clause 4 covers belt cross-sections, datum lengths, length tolerances, centre distance variation, and minimum recommended pulley dimensions. Clause 5 covers how to measure belts and how to check pulley grooves, which matters in practice because the parts are measured in a defined loaded condition, not as loose components.
What are the key requirements of ISO 3410:2026?
ISO 3410:2026 fixes the geometric basis for the belts and the matching pulleys, so manufacturers can design to one profile and verify it the same way.
Belt cross-sections and the datum system
Clause 4.1.2 defines the belt profiles HG through HO and gives their pitch width, nominal height, and top width. The belt is treated as a deformed component on the measuring device, so the dimensions are taken in that condition, under force F. In practice, this means the belt size is not judged from a relaxed belt on the bench.
The section also states that the cross-section has an approximate height-to-width ratio of 0.5, with the pitch line about one-third of the height below the top. The lower one-third of the trapezium may be notched, which matters for belt design and tooling.
Belt lengths and tolerances
Clause 4.1.3 takes the datum lengths from the R 40 preferred-number series from 630 mm to 5 000 mm, and uses R 80 for intermediate values. Clause 4.1.4 gives the length tolerance approach by formula, linked to the preferred number equal to or immediately above the datum length.
In practice, this gives a controlled length system for sourcing replacement belts and for matching drive ratios across machines and suppliers.
Centre distance variation
Clause 4.1.5 gives the maximum admissible centre distance variation, ΔE max., based on belt length and top width. This matters because a variable-speed drive must stay within acceptable adjustment travel while still running correctly and maintaining belt engagement.
Pulley dimensions
Clause 4.2 gives minimum recommended pulley dimensions for fixed-diameter and variable-diameter pulleys, including the type used for belt installation and removal. This helps designers choose pulleys that will actually fit the belt profile and work within the geometry assumed by the standard.
Measuring and checking
Clause 5.1 defines the measuring device as two equal grooved pulleys, one fixed and one movable, with the belt rotated at least two revolutions before the centre distance is measured. Belt length is then calculated from the measured centre distance and the datum circumference of the control pulleys.
Clause 5.1.3 directs centre distance variation checks to ISO 9608. Clause 5.3 gives a rod-and-distance method for checking the groove section of measuring pulleys, which is important for test equipment control and repeatable inspection.
What terms does ISO 3410:2026 define?
ISO 3410:2026 uses the terms and definitions from ISO 1081. The key terms for this document are:
- Datum length - the belt length measured at the pitch-width level, used as the reference size.
- Pitch width, Wp - the belt width at the pitch line, used as the main sizing basis.
- Measuring force, F - the force applied during length measurement to place the belt in its specified measuring condition.
- Centre distance variation - the permitted change in pulley spacing for a belt drive.
- Fixed-diameter pulley - a pulley with one groove diameter used in the drive.
- Variable-diameter pulley - a pulley whose groove diameter changes to vary drive speed.
- Groove section - the pulley groove geometry that matches the belt profile.
Who uses ISO 3410:2026?
ISO 3410:2026 is used by belt manufacturers, pulley manufacturers, and agricultural machinery designers who need compatible variable-speed drives. It is also used by quality control teams, test laboratories, and buyers who specify replacement parts for harvester-thresher machines and related equipment. In practice, they use it to size components, set inspection criteria, and confirm interchangeability.
What changed in ISO 3410:2026 from the previous edition?
ISO 3410:2026 cancels and replaces ISO 3410:1989. The stated technical changes are the addition of a permission in 4.1.2 and a revision of Table 3.
Which standards are used with ISO 3410:2026?
- ISO 3 - provides the preferred-number series used for belt lengths.
- ISO 1081 - provides the vocabulary and terms for V-belts, V-ribbed belts, and grooved pulleys.
- ISO 9608 - gives the test method used to determine centre distance variation.
- ISO 286-2 - provides the tolerance class reference used for the rod diameter tolerance in groove checking.
What does the ISO 3410:2026 document contain?
ISO 3410:2026 contains standardized belt profile data, length series, tolerances, and minimum pulley dimensions in tables, plus measurement formulas and inspection procedures. It includes figures showing the belt cross-section, groove pulleys, the measuring device, and the groove checking method. Tables 1 to 6 are used for design, measurement, and verification of belt and pulley compatibility. The bibliography points to ISO 286-2 for the tolerance system used in groove checking.
