ISO 18636:2026 is an International Standard from ISO for rubber or plastic coated fabrics. It specifies a test method for determining elongation under load and residual deformation. Manufacturers, laboratories, quality managers, and buyers use it to measure how coated fabrics stretch under load and how much deformation remains after unloading.
What does ISO 18636:2026 specify?
ISO 18636:2026 specifies one mechanical test method for coated fabrics: measuring elongation under load and residual deformation. It is focused on this specific performance check, so users can compare materials and production lots under a common procedure.
The document is organized into clauses on principle, apparatus, specimen preparation, mechanical loading, optional heat exposure, calculation, and the test report.
| Test method | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Method 1 | Coated fabrics under high tension in working state, such as architectural structures |
| Method L/T | Coated fabrics under punctual tension in working state, such as upholstery |
| Method 2 | Coated fabrics under other conditions |
What are the key requirements of ISO 18636:2026?
Clause 4 states the principle: marked strips are loaded for a specified time, then the deformation after unloading is calculated from the change in the marked length. In practice, this means the test measures both immediate stretch and how much shape recovery the material achieves after the load is removed.
Clause 5 sets the apparatus requirements. ISO 18636:2026 uses a calibrated ruler, a calliper, a manual loading device, calibrated masses, and, when heat exposure is used, a hot air oven according to ISO 1419. The manual loading device matters because the procedure avoids automatic force regulation and requires the clamps to hold the specimen without slipping or damaging it.
Clause 6 covers specimen preparation. The standard requires strips to be prepared in both directions where relevant, and woven coated fabrics are prepared so the yarn direction remains continuous along the specimen. Two marks are placed on each strip to define the measurement length, because the test result depends on comparing the distance between those marks before, during, and after loading.
Clause 7 describes the mechanical loading test. The specimen is conditioned in atmosphere B according to ISO 2231, positioned in the clamps with the marks set at a defined distance from the clamps, and loaded according to the selected method in Table 1. Table 1 is important in practice because it separates the test conditions for different service situations, so a buyer or lab can select the method that matches the intended use.
Clause 8 gives an optional procedure for residual deformation after heat exposure and mechanical loading. By agreement between the interested parties, specimens may first be exposed to heat in a hot air oven, then stabilized before the loading test. This is useful when the coated fabric will work in elevated-temperature conditions or when aging needs to be taken into account.
Clause 9 gives the calculations for elongation under load and residual deformation and expresses both as percentages. Clause 10 lists the minimum report items, including the document reference, sample identification, results, test date, any deviation from the procedure, and unusual observations. That report content supports traceability and makes results easier to compare.
Who uses ISO 18636:2026?
ISO 18636:2026 is used by laboratories that test coated fabrics, by manufacturers who control product performance, and by quality managers who need repeatable data for release or verification. It is also relevant to buyers and specifiers who need to define or check stretch and recovery behavior for applications such as architectural structures and upholstery.
What changed in ISO 18636:2026 from the previous edition?
ISO 18636:2026 is the first edition.
Which standards are used with ISO 18636:2026?
ISO 18636:2026 refers to ISO 1419:2019 for accelerated-ageing tests and for the hot air oven procedure used in the heat-exposure option. It also refers to ISO 2231 for standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing, including the atmosphere used for the mechanical loading test.
What does the ISO 18636:2026 document contain?
ISO 18636:2026 contains the test principle, apparatus requirements, specimen preparation steps, the mechanical loading procedure, an optional heat-exposure step, calculation formulas, and reporting requirements. It also includes Table 1, which sets the testing parameters for Method 1, Method L/T, and Method 2. The worked procedure is intended for practical testing, quality control, and comparison of coated fabrics under defined loading conditions.
