EN ISO 18636:2026 is a CEN European Standard that adopts ISO 18636:2026 for rubber or plastic coated fabrics. It specifies a method for determining elongation under load and residual deformation, so laboratories, manufacturers and specifiers can compare coated fabrics under defined mechanical loading.
What does EN ISO 18636:2026 specify?
EN ISO 18636:2026 applies to coated fabrics and focuses on two measurements: how much the fabric stretches while loaded, and how much deformation remains after the load is removed. The document is organized into clauses on principle, apparatus, specimen preparation, the loading test, an optional heat-exposure step, calculation and the test report.
Clause 4 explains the measurement principle. Clauses 5 to 7 set out the equipment, specimen preparation and mechanical loading test. Clause 8 covers the optional heat-exposure procedure, Clause 9 gives the calculation method, and Clause 10 states what the report shall include.
What are the key requirements of EN ISO 18636:2026?
Specimens and equipment
- EN ISO 18636:2026 requires strip specimens cut in both directions of the coated fabric. For woven coated fabrics, the preparation is arranged so the yarn direction remains continuous along the strip. In practice, this lets you compare performance in the two fabric directions instead of relying on one direction only.
- EN ISO 18636:2026 allows a calibrated ruler or a calliper for length measurement, and it requires a manual loading device rather than an automatic one. The clamps must hold the specimen without slipping or damaging it. In practice, the grip and measuring resolution matter because they affect the elongation result directly.
Test conditions and method selection
- EN ISO 18636:2026 requires testing in atmosphere B according to ISO 2231. Table 1 provides three method options for different service situations: high tension in working state, other conditions, and punctual tension in working state. In practice, the user chooses the method that matches how the coated fabric will be used.
- EN ISO 18636:2026 uses Table 1 to set the load, loading duration and relaxation time for each method, and the standard requires both elongation under load and residual deformation to be determined. In practice, the test reports both the temporary stretch and the permanent set, which helps compare materials for service stability.
- EN ISO 18636:2026 also allows an agreed heat-exposure step before mechanical loading. The specimens are aged in a hot air oven according to ISO 1419 and then stabilized before testing. In practice, this optional step checks how heat conditioning affects dimensional stability.
Calculation and reporting
- EN ISO 18636:2026 calculates elongation under load from the specimen length measured before unloading, and residual deformation from the length after the relaxation period. Results are rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent. In practice, the calculation turns the raw length measurements into values that are easy to compare across tests.
- EN ISO 18636:2026 requires the test report to state the standard reference, specimen identification, results, the clause used for calculation, any deviation from the procedure and any unusual features observed. If heat exposure was used, the report shall say so. In practice, that gives a clear record for quality control, specification checks and technical discussions.
Who uses EN ISO 18636:2026?
EN ISO 18636:2026 is used by testing laboratories, coated fabric manufacturers, quality managers, product developers and buyers or specifiers who need a mechanical property check for rubber or plastic coated fabrics. It is especially relevant for products used under sustained load, such as architectural structures and upholstery, because it separates immediate elongation from residual deformation.
What changed in EN ISO 18636:2026 from the previous edition?
EN ISO 18636:2026 supersedes EN 15977:2011.
Which standards are used with EN ISO 18636:2026?
ISO 1419:2019 provides the accelerated-ageing test and the hot air oven method used for the optional heat-exposure step in Clause 8. ISO 2231 provides the standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing, including the atmosphere used for the mechanical loading test in Clause 7.
What does the EN ISO 18636:2026 document contain?
EN ISO 18636:2026 contains the principle of the test, the apparatus requirements, specimen preparation, the mechanical loading test, an optional heat-exposure procedure, the calculation method and the test report requirements. Table 1 sets out the method options and their testing parameters for the different use cases. The document gives a practical laboratory procedure for preparing coated-fabric strips, measuring length change under load and documenting the result.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization
