Overview

ISO 19072-4:2019 specifies the type 2 two-way connection interface between a pyrotechnic device (initiator/squib) and the vehicle wiring harness connector. It defines the minimum dimensional features, mechanical function and material characteristics required to ensure safe, interchangeable mating of pyrotechnic device connectors in road vehicles. The standard supports both two‑way and an optional three‑way (with ground) variant for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Minimum specifications for a type 2 pyrotechnic device and harness connector assembly to enable cross‑supplier compatibility in road vehicles.
  • Dimensional features: Detailed interface dimensions for retainer, squib holder and coding/polarization keys (scoop‑proof design to avoid damage on improper mating).
  • Coding & polarization: Mechanical coding keys with assigned RAL colour codes to prevent mis‑mating; multiple coding versions are defined for two‑way/three‑way connectors.
  • Mechanical shorting clip (shunt): Design and functional dimensions for a metallic shorting clip used to short pyrotechnic contacts during handling/storage. Minimum shorting‑clip opening is verified at retainer level (Annex B) with a required check of at least 1.1 mm (see standard).
  • Materials & plating:
    • Contact coating to meet ISO 27874 requirements (coating class not less than 0.5) and porosity ≤ 2 pores/mm² per ISO 14647.
    • Retainer plastic modulus ≥ 4 500 MPa in accordance with ISO 178.
    • Three‑way ground contact plating: tin, thickness 2–5 μm (Annex A).
  • Referenced test & performance documents: ISO 19072-1 (pocket interface definition), ISO 19072-2 (test methods and general performance requirements), ISO 8092-2 and related material standards.

Applications and who uses it

ISO 19072-4:2019 is used by:

  • Automotive OEMs and suppliers of airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and other pyrotechnic safety devices.
  • Connector and harness manufacturers designing initiator-harness interfaces.
  • Vehicle safety system engineers and quality assurance teams ensuring interchangeability and safe handling.
  • Certification and compliance personnel referencing dimensional and material requirements for procurement and verification.

Practical benefits:

  • Ensures compatible mating across multiple suppliers.
  • Improves safety during assembly and service through standard shorting functions and ESD options.
  • Reduces risk of mis‑connection via mechanical coding and polarization.

Introduction
Road vehicles integrate an increasing number of pyrotechnic devices contributing to occupant safety in
vehicles (for example frontal and side airbag, safety belt pre-tensioner, etc.).
Building the complete system requires a supply of various components from several different equipment
suppliers. Vehicle manufacturers need to define a common specification to ensure that connectors
designed and produced for the various equipment suppliers can be mated without any difficulty.
In the current design of this vehicle equipment, three areas of connection have been identified:
— connection between the pyrotechnic device (e.g. initiator) and the harness connector;
— connection between the tab holder and the clip holder of the harness connector; and
— connection between the harness connector and the electronic control module.
The connection between the pyrotechnic device and the harness connector is the only connection that
can be standardized and it forms the subject of this document. Due to the location of the safety device
in the vehicle, the connector design could be right angle or straight.
Due to the fact that several electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection is requested by several vehicle
manufacturers, a three-way with ground option of the pyrotechnic device/initiator harness connector
assembly is also defined (see Annex A).
