Overview

ISO 5507:2026 – Oilseeds, Vegetable Oils and Fats - Nomenclature is an internationally recognized standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This document provides the official listing of botanical names for the main species of oleaginous plants, along with their corresponding raw materials and oils (fats). ISO 5507:2026 is applicable to the nomenclature of both edible and non-edible oils, ensuring greater clarity and uniformity for all stakeholders in the global oilseed and vegetable oil industries. The standard also includes an easy-to-use alphabetical index of raw materials, streamlining reference and reducing ambiguity.

Key Topics

ISO 5507:2026 addresses several crucial areas related to the naming and classification of oilseeds and vegetable oils:

  • Botanical Nomenclature: Provides standardized scientific names for main oilseed species and related plants.
  • Raw Materials Identification: Lists accepted names for seeds, nuts, and fruits used as sources for oils and fats.
  • Oil and Fat Terminology: Assigns definitive terms for both edible and non-edible oils derived from these raw materials.
  • Alphabetical Index: Offers a comprehensive index for quick reference to plant species and oil names.
  • Application in Documentation: Ensures consistent usage of terms in trade, laboratory reporting, product labeling, and international commerce.
  • Periodic Updates: Incorporates newly added species, reflecting advancements in industry and research.

Applications

Standardized nomenclature in oilseeds and vegetable oils offers practical benefits across various industries and professional domains:

  • Food and Beverage Industry: Enables accurate labeling, ingredient sourcing, and compliance with food safety norms for edible oils.
  • Agricultural Sector: Assists in identifying, breeding, and research related to oil crops.
  • Cosmetics and Pharmaceuticals: Helps ensure correct identification of plant-based oils used in product formulations.
  • Chemical and Biofuel Industries: Facilitates the use of non-edible vegetable oils in manufacturing and energy production.
  • Trade and Regulation: Supports customs, regulatory authorities, and traders in the unambiguous identification of oilseeds and oils during import, export, and inspection processes.
  • Research and Academia: Serves as a reliable resource for scientific communication, publications, and international collaboration.

Related Standards

For comprehensive understanding and implementation, the following related standards are also relevant:

  • ISO 659 – Oilseeds – Determination of oil content: Provides methods for measuring oil content in oilseeds, supporting quality control and trade.
  • ISO 661 – Animal and vegetable fats and oils – Preparation of test sample: Covers the laboratory preparation of oil and fat samples for analysis.
  • ISO 5502 – Oilseed residues – Preparation of test samples: Offers procedures for sample preparation of oilseed residues.
  • ISO 5508 – Animal and vegetable fats and oils – Analysis by gas chromatography of methyl esters of fatty acids: Details the analytical procedures for fatty acid composition.

Practical Value

Using ISO 5507:2026 ensures accurate, internationally accepted identification of oilseed plants and their oils, reducing miscommunication and supporting compliance in international trade, quality assurance, and regulatory matters. By establishing a harmonized terminology, this standard aids organizations in meeting global market demands while maintaining product traceability and consumer transparency.
