This document specifies a procedure for determining dynamic viscosity, η, and density, ρ, for the calculation of kinematic viscosity, ν, of middle distillate fuels, fatty acid methyl ester fuels (FAME) and mixtures thereof, up to 60 % with middle distillate fuels, and lubricating oils (e.g. base oils, formulated oils), and synthetics, using a constant pressure viscometer. The range of kinematic viscosities covered in this test method is from 0,5 mm2/s to 2 000 mm2/s, with precision at 40 °C from 1,0 mm2/s to 1 286 mm2/s, and precision at 100 °C from 3,0 mm2/s to 157 mm2/s. The result obtained using the procedure described in this document depends on the rheological behaviour of the sample. This document is predominantly applicable to liquids whose shear stress and shear rate are proportional (Newtonian flow behaviour). However, if the viscosity changes significantly with the shear rate, comparison with other measuring methods is only permissible at similar shear rates.

Le présent document spécifie une procédure de détermination de la viscosité dynamique, η, et de la masse volumique, ρ, pour le calcul de la viscosité cinématique, ν, des distillats moyens, des esters méthyliques d'acides gras (EMAG) et de leurs mélanges, jusqu'à 60 % avec des distillats moyens, ainsi que des huiles lubrifiantes (par exemple huiles de base, huiles formulées) et les huiles synthétiques, à l'aide d'un viscosimètre à pression constante. La plage de viscosités cinématiques couverte par la présente méthode d'essai s’étend de 0,5 mm2/s à 2 000 mm2/s, avec une fidélité à 40 °C de 1,0 mm2/s à 1 286 mm2/s, et une fidélité à 100 °C de 3,0 mm2/s à 157 mm2/s. Le résultat obtenu à l'aide de la procédure décrite dans le présent document dépend du comportement rhéologique de l'échantillon. Ce document s'applique principalement aux liquides dont la contrainte de cisaillement et le taux de cisaillement sont proportionnels (comportement d'écoulement newtonien). Toutefois, si la viscosité varie considérablement en fonction du taux de cisaillement, la comparaison avec d'autres méthodes de mesure n'est possible qu'à des taux de cisaillement similaires.
