Overview

SIST EN IEC 62040-1:2019/A2:2025 is an important European amendment to the existing standard on Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS), specifically focusing on safety requirements. Published by CLC and approved by CENELEC in October 2024, this amendment updates Part 1 of IEC 62040-1:2017/AMD2:2022. It ensures enhanced safety measures for UPS devices-systems designed to provide uninterrupted power supply to critical electronic equipment during outages or power fluctuations. The amendment is to be implemented nationally by March 2026 and serves as a vital reference for manufacturers, installers, and regulatory bodies overseeing UPS safety.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Safety Requirements
This amendment refines the safety protocols and testing procedures that UPS units must comply with to assure protection against electrical hazards, mechanical injury, and fire risk.

  • Definition of Movable UPS
Clearly defines "movable UPS" as those weighing 18 kg or less or equipped with features such as wheels or casters to facilitate easy relocation by ordinary persons. This clarification supports safer handling and maintenance practices.

  • Drop Test for Movable UPS
Introduces and updates the drop test procedure for movable UPS units weighing 18 kg or less. This test simulates scenarios where the device might accidentally be dropped, ensuring durability and continued safe operation even under mishandling.

  • International and National Compliance
Aligns with IEC/ISO Directives ensuring international consensus while obliging CENELEC members across Europe-including countries like Germany, France, UK, and others-to comply. The amendment also respects patent rights and encourages feedback via national electrotechnical committees.

Applications

The updated safety requirements of SIST EN IEC 62040-1:2019/A2:2025 extend practical benefits and essential protections across various use cases:

  • Data Centers and IT Infrastructure
Ensures that UPS systems safeguarding servers and network equipment meet rigorous safety standards during operation and physical handling.

  • Healthcare Facilities
Protects critical medical devices and life-support equipment from power interruptions while maintaining operator safety during UPS maintenance.

  • Industrial Automation
Enhances the reliability and safety of UPS units used within manufacturing plants, protecting machinery and preventing downtime caused by electrical hazards.

  • Commercial Buildings and Offices
Guarantees safe deployment of UPS systems that power communication and security devices, with particular attention to easily movable units.

  • Portable and Mobile UPS Devices
Addresses safety concerns associated with UPS devices designed for mobility-common in temporary work sites or emergency response-by specifying handling tests like drop tests.

Related Standards

  • IEC 62040 Series
Covers general requirements, performance, testing, and environmental considerations for UPS systems, providing a comprehensive framework for design and evaluation.

  • IEC/ISO Directives
Governs the preparation and publication of international standards, harmonizing the approach for UPS and related electrotechnical systems.

  • National Electrotechnical Standards
Member countries implement SIST EN IEC 62040-1:2019/A2:2025 as either a direct adoption or with minimal national adjustments to maintain uniform safety levels across Europe.

Summary

SIST EN IEC 62040-1:2019/A2:2025 amendment advances the safety requirements for UPS systems, emphasizing protection against hazards and introducing testing protocols fitted to the physical characteristics of movable UPS units. This results in safer products for end-users and greater confidence in uninterrupted power systems deployed across various critical sectors. Stakeholders including regulatory authorities, manufacturers, and facility managers are encouraged to align with this updated standard to ensure compliance and operational safety in line with contemporary best practices.
