Overview

EN ISO 11111-4:2005/A1:2009 is Amendment 1 to ISO 11111-4 (Part 4) and is a European adoption published by CEN. The document updates the safety requirements for textile machinery used in yarn processing, cordage and rope manufacturing. This amendment revises normative references, clarifies safety control expectations and aligns Part 4 with newer risk‑assessment and functional safety standards. It also includes informative relationships to EU Directives relevant for CE conformity (Annex ZA/ZB).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Safety requirements specific to yarn processing and cordage/rope machinery (amendment to ISO 11111-4:2005).
  • Updated normative references: Replaces and adds key standards, e.g. ISO 11111-1:2009 (common requirements), ISO 13849-1:2006, IEC 62061:2005, ISO 13857 (replacing ISO 13852), ISO 14121-1, and noise test code amendments (ISO 9902-1/4 Amd.1:2009).
  • Safety-related control systems: The safety-related part of control systems for interlocking guards shall achieve at least Performance Level PL = d per ISO 13849-1:2006 or SIL = 2 per IEC 62061:2005. Any lower level must be justified by a documented risk assessment (ISO 13849-1 or IEC 62061 Annex A).
  • Guarding and interlocking: References to interlocking design principles per ISO 14119:1998/Amd.1:2007 and physical trip devices per EN 1760-2 / EN 1760-3 (trip bars/plates) for protecting mobile units (e.g., knotter, splicer, doffer).
  • Safety distances and limb reach: Standard replaces ISO 13852 with ISO 13857 for safety distances to prevent access to hazard zones.
  • Standards harmonization: Amendment ensures alignment with Parts 1 and 2 of ISO 11111 and with EU machinery directives (98/37/EC and 2006/42/EC).

Practical applications and users

Who uses this standard:

  • Machine manufacturers designing yarn processing, cordage and rope equipment to meet safety and CE requirements.
  • Safety engineers and control system designers implementing PL/SIL-based solutions for interlocks and emergency stops.
  • Compliance officers and technical assessors preparing conformity documentation and risk assessments.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies verifying guarding, interlock performance and noise testing per referenced ISO codes.

How it’s used:

  • To specify required functional safety levels and guarding measures during design.
  • To perform or validate risk assessments that support lower-performance design choices.
  • To harmonize national standards and support CE marking/regulatory conformity across EU/EFTA.

Related standards

  • ISO 11111-1:2009 (Common requirements)
  • ISO 11111-2:2005 (Spinning preparatory and spinning machines) as amended
  • ISO 13849-1:2006 / IEC 62061:2005 (functional safety)
  • ISO 13857 (safety distances)
  • ISO 14119:1998/Amd.1:2007 (interlocking devices)
