Overview

The SIST EN ISO 11111-4:2005/A2:2017 standard specifies safety requirements for textile machinery focused on yarn processing, cordage, and rope manufacturing machinery. Prepared jointly by ISO and CEN under the Vienna Agreement, this amendment enhances existing provisions with updated safety protocols and references, ensuring alignment with international safety principles for textile equipment.

This standard is particularly relevant to manufacturers, designers, and users of textile machinery operating within Europe and globally. It complements other standards that address noise emission and risk assessment, consolidating a comprehensive safety framework.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements for Yarn and Rope Machinery
The standard defines detailed safety measures tailored specifically to machines involved in yarn processing and cordage/rope production. These focus on hazard identification, risk reduction, and emergency controls.

  • Updated Technical References
Amendment 2 revises references to the foundational ISO 12100 on risk assessment and design principles, ensuring harmonization with the most current guidelines. It replaces earlier dated standards for better clarity and applicability.

  • Emergency Stop Devices
Requirements include the positioning of emergency stop pushbuttons, specifying that at least one such device must be located on each end of the machinery for rapid access in emergencies.

  • Machine Types Covered
The scope incorporates a variety of equipment such as tracked or horn gear machines and rotary-type braiding machines, including both solid and spiral braid configurations, reflecting industry diversity.

  • Noise Emission Measures
This standard is complemented by related type C standards such as ISO 9902 (parts 1 and 4) and ISO/DIS 23771, which cover noise measurement and reduction strategies important for protecting workers’ hearing and complying with environmental regulations.

Applications

  • Textile Manufacturing Facilities
Organizations producing yarns, cords, and ropes can implement this standard to ensure their machinery meets rigorous safety norms, reducing downtime due to accidents and boosting worker confidence.

  • Machinery Design and Engineering
Designers can use the guidance to develop safer equipment incorporating necessary safeguards, emergency controls, and ergonomic considerations that comply with international and European safety directives.

  • Compliance and Regulatory Adherence
The standard aligns with the EU Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive), granting a presumption of conformity for textile machinery that meet its requirements, facilitating market access within the European Economic Area.

  • Noise Control in Textile Machinery
Manufacturers looking to minimize the noise footprint of yarn and rope processing equipment benefit from the connection to complementary noise reduction standards, ensuring comprehensive health and safety management.

Related Standards

  • ISO 12100 – Safety of Machinery
Provides the general principles for design, risk assessment, and risk reduction, forming the foundation for all safety standards in machinery.

  • ISO 11111-1 and ISO 11111-2 – Textile Machinery Safety Parts 1 & 2
These parts address safety requirements for other categories of textile machines, providing a complete safety system when used alongside Part 4.

  • ISO 9902 (Parts 1 and 4)
Focused on noise emission measurement from machinery, critical for compliance with workplace safety regulations.

  • ISO/DIS 23771 – Noise Reduction
Offers practical methods for reducing noise emissions from textile machinery.

  • EU Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive)
Governs machine safety compliance in the EU, to which this standard contributes conformity presumption.

Adopting SIST EN ISO 11111-4:2005/A2:2017 ensures that yarn processing and rope manufacturing machinery meet stringent international safety and regulatory requirements. This supports sustainable manufacturing practices, workplace safety, and compliance with evolving industry standards worldwide.
