SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004 is the Slovenian national adoption of EN ISO 6383-2:2004 for the Elmendorf method of determining tear resistance in thin flexible plastic film and sheeting. It tells laboratories and manufacturers how to prepare specimens, run the pendulum tear test, calculate tear resistance in newtons, and report results for production control and acceptance testing.

What does SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004 specify?

SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004 specifies a test method for measuring the force needed to propagate a tear through a slit specimen of thin flexible plastic film or sheeting. It is written for specimens cut from semi-finished and finished products, and it notes that more extensible films can give less reproducible results.

The document is organized into the introduction, Clauses 1 to 10, and three annexes. Clause 1 gives the scope and use of the method, Clauses 2 to 10 cover references, definition, principle, apparatus, specimens, conditioning, procedure, calculation and test report, and the annexes cover instrument adjustment, calibration and European normative references.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AAdjustment and maintenance of the instrument
Annex BCalibration of the instrument
Annex ZANormative references to international publications and their European equivalents

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004?

SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004 uses a pendulum-type Elmendorf tester to tear a specimen from a specified precut slit and then convert the absorbed energy into tear resistance. In practice, this means the test machine, specimen geometry and slit quality all affect the result, so the setup has to be consistent.

  • Clause 4 - Principle: the test measures the energy expended as the pendulum tears the specimen. This matters because the result is a force value derived from the machine energy, not a simple visual rating.
  • Clause 5 - Apparatus: the machine shall be of the Elmendorf type, with a pendulum, jaws, a release mechanism, and a calibrated scale. For users, that means the tester must be properly designed and checked before results can be trusted.
  • Clause 6 - Test specimens: the standard uses specified specimen shapes, with the constant-radius specimen preferred for better reproducibility. That matters because specimen geometry influences how the tear starts and travels.
  • Clause 6 - Sampling and orientation: specimens are taken across the width of the sample and tested in each principal direction. This is important when film properties differ between machine and transverse directions.
  • Clause 7 - Conditioning: specimens are conditioned and tested in the atmosphere specified by ISO 291 unless the material is known not to be humidity-sensitive. This matters because moisture can change film behaviour.
  • Clause 8 - Procedure: thickness is determined first, the instrument is checked for level and zero, and trial tests are used to choose the right pendulum capacity so the absorbed energy falls in the recommended operating range. In practice, this avoids readings that are too small or too close to full scale.
  • Clause 9 - Results: the standard requires tear resistance for each specimen and the arithmetic mean for each principal direction, with standard deviation if needed. This gives a usable production or acceptance figure rather than a single raw reading.
  • Clause 10 - Report: the test report identifies the material, thickness, conditioning atmosphere, specimen type, number of specimens, mean results, individual results and any unusual operating details. That makes the report traceable for quality control and specification work.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004 define?

  • Tear resistance - the force, in newtons, needed to tear a test specimen by the specified method.
  • Elmendorf method - the pendulum-based tear test used in this standard.
  • Constant-radius test specimen - the preferred specimen shape because it gives better reproducibility.
  • Principal direction - the film direction in which tear resistance is reported, typically machine or transverse direction.
  • Augmenting weights - added masses used on the pendulum to increase the test capacity.
  • ISO 291 atmosphere - the standard atmosphere used for conditioning and testing unless the material is not humidity-sensitive.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004?

SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004 is used by plastics laboratories, film and sheeting manufacturers, and quality control teams that need a standard tear-resistance result. It is also used for acceptance or rejection testing under product specifications, so buyers, suppliers and inspectors can compare results on the same basis.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004 adopts ISO 6383-2:1983 as EN ISO 6383-2:2004 without modifications. The CEN foreword states that the ISO text was taken over and approved as the European Standard unchanged.

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004?

  • ISO 291 - provides the standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing.
  • ISO 4591 - provides a method for determining average thickness by gravimetric techniques.
  • ISO 4593 - provides a method for determining thickness by mechanical scanning.
  • ISO 6383-1 - the other part of the ISO 6383 series, covering the trouser tear method.

What does the SIST EN ISO 6383-2:2004 document contain?

The document includes a worked test method, specimen shapes, apparatus requirements and report content for tear testing film and sheeting. Figures show the Elmendorf apparatus and the two specimen shapes, and the text explains how to place the slit, run the pendulum and reject unsuitable tears.

Annex A gives practical checks for alignment, levelling, zero setting, friction and tearing length, which are useful for routine maintenance. Annex B gives a calibration approach using added weights and a correction chart or calculation, so the tester can verify that scale readings match the work done by the pendulum.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards bodies (ISO member bedies). The work of developing International
Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every member body
interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been authorized has the
right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council.
International Standard ISO 6383/2 (formerly ISO/DIS 6824) was developed by
