This document specifies a test method for making cylindrical specimens of hydraulically bound mixtures to a predetermined density and moisture content by axial compression. This document applies to mixtures, or that part of a mixture, containing aggregate up to a maximum size of 22,4 mm, and for mixtures that have sufficient fines or cohesion to allow extrusion without damage immediately after compaction.

Overview

SIST EN 13286-53:2005 specifies a standardized method for manufacturing cylindrical test specimens of hydraulically bound mixtures by axial compression. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and harmonized with EN 13286-53:2004, this standard ensures consistency and reliability in preparing specimens for laboratory testing, especially for road construction materials. The document is applicable to mixtures containing aggregates up to 22.4 mm and having sufficient cohesion to enable extrusion without fracture immediately after compaction.

Key Topics

  • Test Method Specification: Details the step-by-step process for compressing a hydraulically bound mixture to a predefined density and moisture content, using axial pressure in a mould.
  • Applicability: The method is intended for mixtures with aggregate sizes no greater than 22.4 mm and sufficient fines or binder content to allow specimen handling directly after compaction.
  • Equipment and Procedures:
    • Use of cylindrical moulds and displacing collars to minimize density gradients.
    • Application of axial compression using a press or compression testing machine.
    • Precise calculation of mixture mass based on required density and moisture.
  • Specimen Storage and Reporting:
    • Guidance for storing specimens in controlled environments to prevent moisture loss.
    • Requirements for documenting test conditions, sample properties, and any procedural deviations.
  • Quality and Repeatability: By adhering to the defined procedure, laboratories achieve reproducible test conditions and representative mechanical properties for construction materials.

Applications

SIST EN 13286-53:2005 finds practical value in the following areas:

  • Road Construction and Civil Engineering Laboratories: Applied routinely to assess the mechanical properties of hydraulically bound mixtures used in road sub-bases, bases, and other construction layers.
  • Mixture Design Optimization: Enables reliable comparison of different binders, aggregate gradings, and moisture levels, supporting the selection of optimal material combinations.
  • Quality Control: Essential for verifying that construction materials meet specified performance standards before implementation on site.
  • Compliance Testing: Ensures materials adhere to contractual and regulatory requirements by producing standardized test specimens for further mechanical testing (e.g., compressive strength).

Related Standards

The preparation of test specimens forms a foundation for further mechanical and durability testing as prescribed in related standards. Key related documents include:

  • EN 933-2: Tests for geometrical properties of aggregates – Particle size distribution.
  • EN 13286-1: Introduction to test methods for density and water content of unbound/hydraulically bound mixtures.
  • EN 13286 series (Parts 2-7, 40-53): Covering various laboratory compaction techniques, density determination, triaxial tests, and determination of compressive, tensile strengths, and other key properties of hydraulically bound materials.
  • EN 13286-50 to EN 13286-52: Methods for specimen manufacture using alternative compaction equipment (Proctor, vibrating table, vibrating hammer, and vibrocompression).

By integrating SIST EN 13286-53:2005 into laboratory routines, organizations ensure that the assessment of hydraulically bound mixtures is both consistent and in line with European best practices for road construction material testing. This alignment supports material validation, enhances project reliability, and strengthens compliance with industry standards.
