Overview
EN 60811-505:2012 (adopted by CLC/CENELEC from IEC 60811-505:2012) defines the procedure for performing elongation at low temperature tests on extruded insulations and sheaths for electric and optical fibre cables. It is part of the IEC 60811 series of test methods for non‑metallic materials used in cable construction and is intended to be read in conjunction with EN/IEC 60811-100 (General).
Key points:
- Applies to extruded insulation and sheath materials used in cables.
- Tests are carried out at the low temperature specified in the relevant cable standard.
- Tests must be performed not less than 16 hours after extrusion.
- Supersedes clauses 8.3 and 8.4 of the earlier IEC 60811-1-4:1985.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Intended for insulated conductors of circular cross‑section with external diameter > 12.5 mm, and for sector-shaped cores large enough to prepare dumb‑bell specimens.
- Sheath tests cover cables with overall diameter > 12.5 mm or flat cables with a major axis > 12.5 mm. Smaller cables are addressed by the bending test in IEC 60811-504.
- Sampling and specimen preparation
- Each core is represented by two samples of suitable length.
- Insulation must be opened and conductor/semiconducting layers removed before preparing test specimens.
- Dumb‑bell test pieces are used when feasible (standard includes figures for test-piece shapes).
- Test procedure
- Specifies apparatus, conditioning and the low‑temperature test conditions (temperature determined by the relevant cable standard).
- Defines evaluation of results and reporting requirements.
- Interdependencies
- This Part is to be used with IEC 60811-100 and cross‑references IEC 60811-501 (mechanical property tests) and IEC 60811-504 (low‑temperature bending tests).
Applications and users
Who uses EN 60811-505:2012:
- Cable manufacturers validating material performance in cold environments.
- Independent test laboratories performing type‑approval and routine quality testing.
- R&D and material engineers selecting polymers for low‑temperature flexibility and durability.
- QA, procurement and compliance teams ensuring products meet international cable test standards. Practical uses:
- Verify that insulation and sheath retain required elongation and do not crack at low temperature.
- Support material selection for cables used in cold climates, offshore, marine and transport applications.
- Provide objective test evidence for standards compliance and product specifications.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to
