Overview
EN IEC 62037-2:2021/A1:2026 (Amendment 1) is an update to the international standard for measuring passive intermodulation (PIM) in coaxial cable assemblies. It clarifies test methods and reporting requirements for PIM measurement on coaxial cables and connectors, with specific focus on per-end testing and per‑cable testing in multi‑channel assemblies. The amendment was prepared by IEC TC 46 (Cables, wires, waveguides, RF connectors and passive components) and addresses electromagnetic compatibility aspects of passive RF and microwave components.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test scope: Measurement of passive intermodulation in coaxial cable assemblies and associated connectors.
- Per‑end and per‑cable testing: Tests shall be performed independently on each end and on each individual cable in a multi‑channel assembly.
- Connector compliance: Connectors used in the test must meet their specification when subjected to the impact test specified in IEC 62037-3.
- Mechanical stress considerations:
- Test set-up and cable movement are illustrated (example figures referenced in the amendment).
- The bending radius (r) is tied to the cable’s nominal outside diameter (ø).
- The distance parameter (d) is related to cable flexibility and the specified repeated bending radius; default calculation rules apply where not otherwise specified.
- Measurement procedure:
- Record the maximum PIM level before applying mechanical stress.
- Apply mechanical stress/rotation as specified.
- Record the maximum PIM level after applying mechanical stress.
- Reporting requirements: For each individual cable in the assembly the report shall include:
- Maximum PIM levels prior to rotation,
- Maximum PIM levels during rotation,
- Maximum PIM levels after rotation.
Practical applications and users
This amendment is directly useful for:
- Manufacturers of coaxial cable assemblies, RF connectors and passive microwave components - to validate product PIM performance and compliance.
- Independent and in‑house test laboratories that perform PIM testing and produce compliance reports.
- RF systems integrators, installers and site acceptance engineers who need to verify low‑PIM performance for base stations, DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems), and critical RF links.
- Procurement and compliance teams specifying PIM measurement criteria for supplier acceptance.
Benefits include improved repeatability of PIM tests, clearer per‑cable pass/fail criteria for multi‑channel assemblies, and harmonized reporting for acceptance and troubleshooting.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be cle
