Overview

SIST EN IEC 62037-4:2012/oprA1:2025 is an essential international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under CLC stewardship. It addresses the measurement of passive intermodulation (PIM) in coaxial cables, focusing on both static and dynamic test procedures to assess the intermodulation levels generated by passive RF and microwave devices. This technical amendment (Amendment 1) refines measurement protocols for accurate and repeatable assessment of PIM, which is critical for ensuring high-performance operation in RF and microwave communication systems.

Key Topics

  • Passive Intermodulation (PIM) Measurement
The standard specifies methods for measuring PIM, an unwanted signal distortion generated by passive components such as coaxial cables. PIM can severely degrade signal quality in wireless systems.

  • Dynamic and Static Test Procedures
Amendment 1 clarifies the testing process, emphasizing the recording of the maximum PIM levels under various conditions:

    • Static conditions before and after movement.
    • Dynamic conditions, such as clamping and flexing of cable loops, to simulate real-world mechanical stress.
  • Coaxial Cable Focus
This part of the EN 62037 series is specifically tailored for coaxial cables, components widely used in RF signal transmission for telecommunications, broadcasting, and radar systems.

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Considerations
The standard aligns with EMC directives, ensuring that the coaxial cables under test do not contribute to interference that could affect communication system performance.

  • International Collaboration
Developed in compliance with ISO/IEC Directives, the standard benefits from a consensus among global electrotechnical committees to harmonize testing practices.

Applications

  • Wireless Network Infrastructure
Ensuring minimal passive intermodulation in coaxial cables used in base stations, antennas, and repeater systems improves signal clarity and reduces dropped connections.

  • RF and Microwave Systems Testing
Manufacturers and test labs apply this standard to verify the quality and reliability of coaxial cables before deployment in sensitive telecommunications, military, or aerospace systems.

  • Quality Control in Cable Production
Cable producers use these measurement procedures to control manufacturing consistency and certify product compliance with international performance requirements.

  • System Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Field engineers utilize PIM measurement techniques defined in this standard to identify and mitigate issues related to cable degradation or connector faults that may cause intermodulation distortion.

  • EN IEC 62037-2:2012 – Measurement Techniques for RF Connectors.
  • EN IEC 62037-3:2012 – Measurement Methods for Waveguide Components.
  • ISO/IEC Directives Parts 1 & 2 – Normative guidance for the development and drafting of international standards.

Summary

SIST EN IEC 62037-4:2012/oprA1:2025 provides a critical framework for the accurate measurement of passive intermodulation in coaxial cables, ensuring high fidelity in RF and microwave transmission lines. By defining strict procedures for dynamic and static testing, recording the maximum intermodulation levels under various mechanical conditions, the standard supports manufacturers, test labs, and system operators in achieving optimal electromagnetic compatibility and signal integrity. Adoption of this standard helps mitigate intermodulation interference, improving overall system performance in the wireless communication industry.
