Overview
EN 60335-2-28:2003/A1:2008 is the CENELEC (European) amendment to the IEC product standard covering safety of household and similar electrical sewing machines. Amendment A1 (approved 2008-05-01) updates the particular requirements in Part 2‑28 and clarifies how the part relates to the general requirements in Part 1 of IEC 60335. It is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories, conformity assessors and regulatory bodies involved in sewing machine safety and compliance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Confirms that Part 2‑28 contains particular requirements for sewing machines and that when Part 2 does not add requirements, Part 1 applies.
- Reiterates that this is a product-family standard that takes precedence over horizontal/generic standards covering the same hazards.
- Users and vulnerable persons
- Explicitly addresses risks to persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and to children playing with the appliance.
- Abnormal conditions and electromagnetic effects
- Extension to cover abnormal situations that can be expected in practice and to consider how electromagnetic phenomena can affect safe operation.
- Marking and instructions
- Updates a reference for graphical symbols / markings to IEC 60417-5012 (2002-10) in the marking/instructions clause.
- Bibliography
- Adds/clarifies the relationship with ergonomic and hot-surface guidance: ISO 13732-1 is referenced (noted as harmonized in EN ISO 13732-1:2006).
- Regulatory timing
- Amendment dates: implementation at national level by publication (dop) 2009-02-01; withdrawal of conflicting national standards (dow) 2013-05-01.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
- Manufacturers and product designers of household and light-industrial sewing machines - for design decisions that ensure compliance and safe operation.
- Testing and certification bodies - to develop test plans and conformity assessment procedures specific to sewing machines.
- Regulatory authorities and market surveillance - to assess product compliance with European electrotechnical safety requirements.
- Technical writers and safety engineers - to prepare user instructions, marking, warnings and safety documentation aligned with the standard.
Related standards
- IEC 60335-1 (Part 1 - General requirements) - applies where Part 2‑28 has no additional requirements.
- IEC 60417-5012 - graphical symbol referenced for marking.
- ISO 13732-1 / EN ISO 13732-1:2006 - ergonomics / hot-surface assessment referenced in the bibliography.
