Overview
EN 14309:2015 - "Thermal insulation products for building equipment and industrial installations - Factory made products of expanded polystyrene (EPS) - Specification" is a CEN European Standard that defines requirements and test procedures for factory‑made EPS products used for thermal insulation. It covers EPS items (faced or unfaced) in forms such as boards, rolls, pipe sections, lags and other prefabricated ware intended for building equipment and industrial installations with an approximate operating temperature range of −180 °C to +80 °C. Modified EPS with higher temperature resistance is also included. The standard sets out characteristics, testing, conformity assessment, marking and labelling - but not the required performance levels for specific projects.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and exclusions: Applies to factory‑made EPS; excludes in‑situ loose fill/poured EPS and products for building structural insulation. Products with declared thermal conductivity > 0.060 W/(m·K) at 10 °C are excluded.
- Temperature guidance: Special suitability tests are advised below −50 °C (e.g., to address oxygen liquefaction risks); manufacturers’ instructions must be followed.
- Product properties and tests: Specifies thermal conductivity, dimensions and tolerances, dimensional stability, reaction to fire, compressive and tensile strength, water absorption, apparent density, vapour transmission and other durability characteristics.
- Test methods and sampling: Includes conditioning, sampling and standardized test procedures for performance verification.
- Conformity and factory control: Describes Product Type Determination (PTD), Factory Production Control (FPC), Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP) and marking/CE labelling requirements (see Annex ZA for Construction Products Regulation links).
- Annexes: Normative annexes cover factory production control, product classification and minimum service temperature determination; informative annexes list additional properties.
