The method allows the identification and the determination of the total water soluble fraction of each of these chelating agents. It does not allow to distinguish between the free form and the metal bound form of the chelating agents.
NOTE   EDTA, HEEDTA and DTPA are abbreviations used in this European Standard for the sake of simplicity. For complete names see Annex A.
This method applies to fertilizers containing chelates of one or more of the following micro-nutrients: cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, zinc and with a mass fraction of at least 0,1 %.

Bezüglich der vollständigen Bezeichnungen siehe Anhang A.

Overview

SIST EN 13368-1:2014 is a European standard established by CEN that defines a precise chromatographic method for determining the content of specific chelating agents-EDTA, HEEDTA, and DTPA-in fertilizers. These chelating agents play a crucial role in nutrient delivery by stabilizing trace elements such as cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc. The standard focuses on the total water-soluble fraction of these chelating agents in fertilizers, using ion chromatography to ensure accurate identification and quantification.

This standard is essential for laboratories, manufacturers, and quality control entities within the fertilizer industry to ensure accurate determination of chelating agents, thereby guaranteeing product consistency and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
SIST EN 13368-1:2014 applies specifically to fertilizers containing at least 0.1% (mass fraction) of chelates of micro-nutrients complexed with EDTA, HEEDTA, or DTPA. The standard targets the combined measurement of free and metal-bound forms but does not differentiate between them.

  • Analytical Principle
The method works by substituting micro-nutrients in the aqueous fertilizer extract with iron(III) ions. The resulting iron chelates undergo separation through ion exchange chromatography using an anion exchange column and nitrate-acetate eluent at controlled pH. Detection relies on UV photometry at 330 nm, enhanced by a post-column reaction with diluted perchloric acid.

  • Interferences and Limitations
Various salts and compounds may interfere with the chromatographic process, including high concentrations of chloride and certain polyamino polycarboxylic acids. The method mitigates interference through the choice of column and specific reagent treatment protocols.

  • Reagents and Equipment
Utilizes analytical grade reagents such as nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, and specialized stock solutions of EDTA, HEEDTA, and DTPA. Essential apparatus includes a liquid chromatograph equipped with an isocratic pump, injection valve, anion exchange column, UV/VIS detector, and membrane filters with 0.2 μm and 0.45 μm porosities.

  • Procedure Overview
The standardized procedure involves sample extraction with water, replacement of native micro-nutrients by iron(III), filtration, and chromatographic analysis using calibration standards. Results are expressed as mass fractions of chelating agents calculated against calibration graphs.

Applications

  • Quality Control in Fertilizer Production
Manufacturers use SIST EN 13368-1:2014 to quantify critical chelating agents, essential for optimizing the bioavailability of micronutrients and ensuring product performance.

  • Regulatory Compliance
The standardized method supports compliance with European fertilizer legislation by providing a reliable, reproducible test for ingredient verification.

  • Research and Development
Fertilizer R&D labs apply this method to develop and optimize chelate formulations, improving nutrient efficiency and environmental safety.

  • Agricultural Testing
Enables testing laboratories to verify fertilizer content, thereby ensuring accurate nutrient delivery recommendations for agricultural use.

Related Standards

  • EN 1482-1: Sampling
Provides guidance on fertilizer sampling techniques which complement the sample preparation requirements in SIST EN 13368-1:2014.

  • EN 1482-2: Sample Preparation
Details procedures for preparing fertilizer samples prior to chromatographic analysis for accurate and consistent results.

  • EN 12944 Series: Vocabulary
Defines key terminology related to fertilizers and liming materials, supporting precise communication and understanding within the industry.

  • EN ISO 3696: Water Quality
Specifies the standards for laboratory water quality, which is critical for ensuring reproducibility and accuracy in chromatographic analysis.
