Overview
SIST EN 17132:2019 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a reliable and precise method for the determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in textiles and textile products. This method utilizes gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometric detection (GC-MS) to quantify PAHs at trace levels, achieving a limit of quantification of 0.1 mg/kg. The standard is essential for ensuring safety and regulatory compliance concerning hazardous PAH content in textile materials.
This standard addresses the growing need for accurate testing of PAHs due to health concerns and legal restrictions, particularly those imposed by the European Union under REACH regulations. It applies primarily to textile components that come into direct or prolonged contact with human skin, ensuring consumer safety.
Key Topics
Scope and Application: SIST EN 17132:2019 targets the measurement of PAHs in components of textile products, including fabrics used in clothing, footwear, gloves, and other textiles that contact human skin under normal conditions.
Health and Safety: PAHs are carcinogenic, potentially damaging to unborn children, and harmful to organs through prolonged exposure. This standard promotes safety by supporting compliance with strict regulatory limits on PAH levels.
Regulated PAHs: The standard covers 18 PAH compounds, including Benzo[a]pyrene, Benzo[e]pyrene, Chrysene, and Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, among others. These substances are subject to regulation due to their toxicity.
Methodology:
- Sample extraction using toluene at 60°C in an ultrasonic bath for 1 hour.
- Subsequent analysis by gas chromatography coupled with mass selective detection (GC-MS).
- Use of internal standards for accurate quantification.
Calibration and Quantification: Calibration solutions with PAH standards at various concentrations allow precise measurement down to 0.1 mg/kg, catering to regulatory thresholds.
Sample Preparation: Textile products are dismantled and separated by material type (textile, leather, polymer). Samples are cut into small pieces ensuring representative extraction.
Safety Precautions: Due to the hazardous nature of PAHs and toxic solvents like toluene, adherence to safety protocols during handling and testing is strongly emphasized.
Applications
Textile Industry Compliance: The method enables manufacturers and quality control laboratories to verify that textile products comply with European REACH regulations restricting PAH content, especially Entry 72 of Annex XVII.
Consumer Safety Testing: Ensures that textiles, clothing, footwear, and accessories do not release harmful PAHs during normal or foreseeable use by consumers.
Regulatory Enforcement: Regulatory bodies can use the method for market surveillance and enforcement of PAH restrictions in textile products to protect public health.
Product Development: Supports textile chemists and manufacturers in formulating materials with reduced or eliminated PAH content, contributing to safer products.
Research & Environmental Monitoring: Useful for academic and environmental laboratories studying contamination and exposure risks associated with textiles.

The SIST EN 17132:2019 standard presents a comprehensive method for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in textile products, utilizing gas chromatography. The primary scope of this document establishes a protocol to accurately measure the presence of PAHs in different components of textiles, achieving a limit of quantification of 0.1 mg/kg. This low detection threshold ensures that the standard is suitable for assessing compliance with health and safety regulations regarding hazardous substances in textiles. One of the notable strengths of SIST EN 17132:2019 is its rigorous methodological framework, which facilitates consistency and reliability in testing for PAHs across various textile materials. The standard addresses an important concern in textile safety, given the potential health risks associated with PAH exposure. Furthermore, the inclusion of detailed testing procedures enhances the standard’s applicability in both research and industrial settings, providing manufacturers and regulatory bodies with a robust tool for safety evaluations. The relevance of this standard cannot be overstated, particularly in light of growing consumer and regulatory demands for safer textile products. As awareness of the health impacts of harmful compounds in textiles increases, the detailed method outlined in SIST EN 17132:2019 serves as a vital resource for ensuring that textile products meet stringent safety criteria. By standardizing the approach to PAH determination, it supports manufacturers in demonstrating compliance with environmental and safety regulations, thereby fostering consumer confidence. In conclusion, SIST EN 17132:2019 stands out as a crucial document that enhances the quality and safety of textile products through its precise determination method for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Its focus on quantification, regulatory relevance, and methodological rigor solidifies its role as an essential standard in the textiles industry.
