Overview
kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 is the European draft standard that specifies the safety requirements for portable electric immersion heaters used in household and similar environments. With a maximum rated voltage of 250 V, these appliances are designed for heating liquids in situations such as homes, small businesses, and light industry. Developed by SIST in alignment with IEC 60335-2-74:2021, this standard enhances consumer safety by addressing electrical, mechanical, and thermal hazards associated with portable immersion heaters.
This standard replaces the previous EN 60335-2-74:2003 and its amendments, ensuring an updated and harmonized approach to safety in line with the latest international practices for household electrical appliances.
Key Topics
- Product Scope: Focuses on portable immersion heaters intended for household and similar uses, including those that may be used by laypersons in commercial and agricultural settings.
- Exclusions: Does not apply to industrial-only appliances, battery-powered devices, heaters for corrosive/explosive atmospheres, aquarium heaters, or fixed immersion heaters.
- Safety Principles: Addresses electrical safety, protection against live parts, overheating, moisture resistance, mechanical strength, and fire resistance.
- Marking and Instructions: Specifies requirements for product labelling (e.g., minimum and maximum immersion depths), and clear, user-focused instructions for safe operation.
- Protection Features: Details on requirements for ingress protection (minimum IPX7 for water resistance), thermal cut-outs, and overload protection ensure continued safe operation.
- Testing Methods: Outlines standardized test conditions, including durability and abnormal operation simulations to verify compliance with safety benchmarks.
- Interoperability: Designed to be used in conjunction with IEC 60335-1, the general safety standard for household appliances.
Applications
kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 is vital for manufacturers, compliance engineers, product designers, and certification bodies working with:
- Portable liquid heaters for domestic kitchens, including water boilers for hot beverages and cooking preparation.
- Heaters used in small businesses, such as cafés, catering, or on farms for animal troughs, where preventing freezing is necessary.
- Public and light commercial establishments, ensuring safe use by non-professional users.
- Product design and testing: Ensures that new models of immersion heaters meet minimum safety requirements.
- Market access: Demonstrates compliance with European safety regulations, which is essential for market entry and sales throughout Europe.
By following this standard, organizations can reduce the risk of electric shocks, burns, fire, and other common hazards associated with immersion heaters, ultimately fostering consumer trust and regulatory acceptance.
Related Standards
When applying kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026, stakeholders should also reference the following standards for a comprehensive safety approach:
- IEC 60335-1: Safety - General requirements for household and similar electrical appliances (core standard referenced throughout Part 2-74).
- IEC 60335-2-15: Particular requirements for appliances for heating liquids.
- IEC 60335-2-55: Particular requirements for electrical appliances used with aquariums and garden ponds.
- IEC 60335-2-73: Particular requirements for fixed immersion heaters.
- Additional standards for electromagnetic compatibility (CISPR 14-1, IEC 61000-3 series) and national wiring requirements may also apply.
By adhering to these related standards and the specific requirements outlined in kSIST FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026, manufacturers and distributors can ensure the highest standard of portable immersion heater safety, supporting regulatory compliance and consumer protection across Europe.

Part 2-74: Particular requirements for portable immersion heaters
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
IEC 60335-2-74 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 61: Safety of household and
similar electrical appliances. It is an International Standard.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2002, Amendment 1:
2006 and Amendment 2:2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous
edition:
a) the text has been aligned with IEC 60335-1:2020;
b) some notes have been converted to normative text (Clause 1, 7.1);
c) requirements for appliances that maintain a liquid at a set temperature are added (19.1,
30.2).
