Overview

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-14:2024/A11:2024 is an important European standard published by CLC that specifies the safety requirements for electric kitchen machines used in households and similar environments. This amendment (A11:2023) updates and enhances the original standard (EN IEC 60335-2-14:2023) with additional safety measures, improved marking and instruction guidelines, and new requirements for mechanical and thermal performance. The standard applies to kitchen appliances with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V, ensuring they meet strict safety requirements for domestic and comparable settings.

Key Topics

The SIST EN IEC 60335-2-14:2024/A11:2024 standard addresses key safety aspects for kitchen machines, including:

  • Scope of Use: Focuses on electric kitchen machines intended for households and similar purposes, such as blenders, food processors, mixers, juicers, slicers, and grinders.
  • General Safety: Addresses common hazards in typical household environments, but excludes specific use scenarios involving young children and vulnerable populations unless appropriate supervision or instruction is present.
  • Marking and Instructions: Mandates clear warnings and instructions on appliance use, especially for appliances with accessible blades or moving parts. Appliances must indicate risks of unintended use and outline safe operating practices.
  • Mechanical Safety: Introduces requirements for lid interlocks, stability, protection against accidental operation, and resistance to mechanical shocks (drop tests for hand-held appliances).
  • Thermal Safety: Sets maximum permissible temperature rises for external surfaces under normal operation, recognizing risks associated with heat during use.
  • Protection Against Mechanical Hazards: Details requirements for guarding hazardous parts, ensuring devices like blenders and processors cannot be operated without safety measures in place.
  • Specific Appliance Restrictions: Lays out which machines must not be used by children, and under what circumstances products like can openers or juicers may be used by children with supervision.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-14:2024/A11:2024 is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of electric kitchen machines targeting the European market, guiding product development to ensure compliance with the latest household appliance safety standards.
  • Product Testing Laboratories performing type tests and conformity assessments according to EU requirements.
  • Importers and Distributors verifying that products meet updated safety requirements before placing them on the European market.
  • Certification Bodies assessing conformity and issuing CE markings based on harmonized standards under the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and other related EU regulations.

Typical products covered include:

  • Blenders and hand-held blenders
  • Food processors and mixers
  • Juicers, slicers, shredders, and grinders
  • Coffee mills, can openers, and ice-cream machines
  • Appliances for preparing and processing food at home or in similar settings

Related Standards

Compliance with SIST EN IEC 60335-2-14:2024/A11:2024 may require reference to other related standards, especially for complete safety assurance, such as:

  • EN IEC 60335-1: General safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances
  • EN IEC 60335-2-16: Safety for food waste disposers
  • EN IEC 60335-2-24: Safety for refrigerating appliances
  • EN 60811-504 / EN 60811-505: Test methods for cable insulation and sheaths
  • IEC 60335-2-64: Requirements for commercial electric kitchen machines

Consultation of these related standards helps manufacturers and stakeholders address all applicable safety requirements and demonstrate full compliance for market access.

Practical Value

The SIST EN IEC 60335-2-14:2024/A11:2024 standard delivers the following practical benefits:

  • Provides clear criteria for appliance design, marking, and documentation
  • Minimizes risk of accidents and injuries in the kitchen environment
  • Supports legal compliance and market acceptance within the European Union
  • Enhances consumer confidence in the safety and reliability of kitchen machines

For all organizations involved in the design, production, distribution, or certification of electric kitchen appliances, adherence to this standard is critical for ongoing product safety and regulatory conformity.
