Overview

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-60:2024/A11:2024 is a European harmonized standard endorsed by CLC that specifies particular safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, focusing on whirlpool baths and whirlpool spas. This amendment A11 updates and supplements the core International Standard IEC 60335-2-60:2017 by introducing European Common Modifications to enhance safety and usability in compliance with European electrical and consumer product regulations.

Published in December 2023 and mandatory for implementation by May 2024 across CENELEC member countries, this standard applies to manufacturers, installers, and safety inspectors involved in whirlpool bath and spa products. It ensures reasonably foreseeable hazards are addressed, emphasizing the protection of all users including vulnerable groups, while clarifying conditions for unsupervised use by children.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Hazard Considerations
Focus on foreseeable hazards from whirlpool baths and spas; excludes unsupervised use by very young children and certain risky behaviors.

  • Electrical Safety Classifications
Appliances are categorized into Class I, Class II, or Class III, with specific voltage limits-particularly 12 V max for portable or spa devices-to reduce electric shock risks.

  • Ingress Protection (IP) Ratings
Minimum IP ratings are defined: whirlpool baths and spas must meet IPX5, submersible appliances require IPX8, and other related devices must comply with IPX4 or IPX0 depending on installation location.

  • Residual Current Devices (RCDs)
Requirements for RCD integration in transportable whirlpool spas include mandatory use on supply cords, performance criteria (max 0.01 A residual current, max 0.3 s trip time), and mechanical strength tests to ensure protection from drops or crushing.

  • Marking and User Instructions
Detailed guidance on labeling appliances for safe use by children and vulnerable persons, with specific cautions for use with RCDs, and installation instructions referencing IEC 60364-7-701 and IEC 60364-7-702 standards for electrical installations in bathing locations.

  • Leakage Current and Electric Strength Tests
Modified test methods involving metal foil and specific leakage current limits to safeguard against electric shock through water-contact surfaces.

  • Mechanical and Construction Requirements
Requirements to ensure components withstand impact and mechanical stress, including tests for RCD enclosures and durability of supply cords.

  • Special Requirements for Portable and Transportable Appliances
Supply cords must have minimum lengths (e.g., at least 5 m for detachable power supply cords) and robust construction to allow safe connection outside hazardous zones.

  • National Deviations and Compliance
Specific adaptations exist for countries such as Switzerland including additional RCD specifications and supply cord requirements.

Applications

  • Manufacturers of Whirlpool Baths and Spas
Compliance with SIST EN IEC 60335-2-60:2024/A11:2024 is essential for market access in Europe, ensuring that products meet stringent safety and performance standards to protect users and reduce liability risks.

  • Safety Inspectors and Certification Bodies
The standard provides clear test methods and criteria for assessing electrical safety, mechanical strength, and marking adequacy of whirlpool appliances.

  • Installers and Electrical Contractors
Installation guidelines linked to IEC 60364 series help ensure that whirlpool baths and spas are installed in accordance with electrical safety requirements for special locations such as bathrooms and pools, minimizing electrical hazards.

  • End Users and Consumers
The standard leads to improved appliance safety, with clear instructions limiting unsupervised use by children and enabling safer maintenance, reducing incidents related to electrical malfunctions or improper use.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60335-1:2012 and Amendments
General safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, referenced throughout this standard for overarching safety principles.

  • IEC 61540
Specifies requirements for Residual Current Devices (RCDs), providing performance and design criteria for devices protecting transportable whirlpool spas.

  • IEC 60364-7-701 and IEC 60364-7-702
Electrical installation standards covering special locations like rooms containing baths, showers, spas, swimming pools, and fountains-required for safe appliance installation.

  • EN 61008-2-1
Relevant for Portable RCDs used in certain national deviations, such as Switzerland, ensuring device performance compliance.
