Overview
SIST EN 60335-2-15:2016/A1:2021 is a European standard issued by CLC that specifies safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances designed to heat liquids. This standard applies to appliances operating at rated voltages up to 250 V. It focuses on the particular safety considerations necessary when heating liquids, covering wide-ranging appliances such as coffee-makers, kettles, and other liquid-heating devices intended for domestic use.
This amendment A1 updates the original 2016 version, reflecting advances in appliance design and usage while ensuring continued consumer safety. It integrates provisions that address design, construction, marking, testing, and operational requirements specific to liquid heating appliances.
Key topics
Scope and Definitions
The standard specifies appliances for heating liquids for household use, detailing key definitions such as "decorative door" and clarifying operational conditions for coffee-makers and similar appliances.Marking and Instructions
Clear user instructions are mandated. For example, coffee-makers with decorative doors or intended for cabinet use must specify safe operating conditions, such as keeping doors open during operation. Warning labels about cracked surfaces are also required to prevent user hazards.Power Input and Current Measurement
Power and current consumption must be measured through a full operating cycle selected by the user (e.g., descaling, brewing) starting at ambient temperature. This ensures accurate assessment of energy use during typical appliance operation.Heating Performance and Safety Tests
Appliances, including coffee-makers with decorative doors, undergo testing with doors open to simulate safe operating conditions. Specific protocols are outlined for espresso coffee-makers with steam outlets and automatic coffee machines that grind beans, ensuring continuous safety during complex operations.Moisture Resistance
The standard includes practical moisture resistance testing by simulating liquid spillage during filling or pouring actions, ensuring appliance durability and safety in real-world use scenarios.Abnormal Operation Tests
Appliances are tested under conditions such as overheating (e.g., covered heating surfaces) and other abnormal scenarios to verify they do not ignite or cause hazards. Special tests apply to models with keep-warm functions, decorative doors, or integrated coffee bean mills.Construction Requirements
Safety features include restrictions on movement of frothing nozzles (maximum 45° rotation) and pressure relief protocols for pressure cookers to prevent rupture or leaks. Protective and pressure-regulating devices must ensure the appliance’s structural integrity during operation and testing.
Applications
This standard is essential for manufacturers, testing organizations, and regulatory authorities involved with:
Electric Coffee Makers
Including automatic espresso machines, traditional coffee makers, and bean grinders to ensure safe brewing, heating, and cleaning cycles.Electric Kettles and Liquid Heaters
Covering appliances designed for boiling water and similar heating functions in domestic and similar environments.Multi-function Liquid Heating Appliances
Devices combining heating with additional features such as keep-warm plates, steam nozzles, or decorative cabinetry elements.
By adhering to SIST EN 60335-2-15:2016/A1:2021, stakeholders can ensure that liquid heating appliances meet stringent safety requirements, reduce risks of fire, electrical hazards, and mechanical failure, thereby protecting consumers and building product trust.
