Overview

SIST EN IEC 63128:2019/A1:2024 is a European amendment to the international standard IEC 63128:2019, ratified by CENELEC in August 2024. This standard covers the lighting control interface for dimming, focusing specifically on the analogue voltage dimming interface for electronic current sourcing controlgear. It defines technical requirements and guidelines for electronic lighting controlgear that regulate dimming via analogue voltage signals.

The amendment introduces definitions and provisions for warm dimming, which enables lighting systems, particularly LEDs, to simulate the traditional incandescent lamp dimming effect where the light color temperature decreases as the brightness dims. This addresses demands for better quality lighting control aligned with human perception and design aesthetics.

Key Topics

  • Analogue Voltage Dimming Interface
The standard specifies requirements for interfaces controlling electronic controlgear through analogue voltages (typically 0-10 V control signals) to adjust light output levels smoothly and reliably.

  • Warm Dimming Capability
Introduced in this amendment, warm dimming allows LED systems to lower correlated color temperature (CCT) alongside luminous flux reduction, emulating the warm color shift of incandescent sources during dimming.

  • Correlated Color Temperature Factor (CCTF)
Defined to quantify the ratio of dimmed CCT to full power CCT, used to calculate warm dimming responses for LED lighting controlgear.

  • Simulation of Incandescent Dimming
An optional feature guiding how dim-to-warm effects are implemented technically, including mathematical formulae relating dimming voltage to LED power and resulting color temperature.

  • Marking Requirements
Electronic light source controlgear using dim-to-warm functionality must be clearly marked for easy identification to ensure proper application and compliance with the standard.

  • Annex A - Warm Dim Control Examples
Practical examples demonstrate how warm dimming behaves in systems with linear output power to control voltage response. Visual graphs illustrate the CCT factor, relative LED power, and control voltage relationships for typical dim-to-warm configurations.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 63128:2019/A1:2024 is crucial for manufacturers, system integrators, and designers involved with:

  • LED Lighting Systems
Particularly in architectural, commercial, hospitality, and residential settings where high-quality dimming and color temperature control are required to enhance ambiance and occupant comfort.

  • Dimmable Electronic Controlgear
Prerequisite for products such as LED drivers and ballasts that support analogue voltage dimming interfaces with current sourcing capabilities.

  • Energy-efficient Lighting Controls
Facilitates compliance with energy regulations by enabling precise, user-friendly lighting control while mimicking familiar incandescent dimming behaviors.

  • Lighting Control Protocols and Interfaces
This standard supports integration with broader lighting management systems that rely on analogue control signals for dimming, thereby contributing to interoperability across vendor products.

Related Standards

  • IEC 63128:2019
The base international standard defining analogue voltage dimming interfaces for electronic current sourcing controlgear.

  • IEC 845-23-068
Defines correlated color temperature (CCT) terms referenced in this amendment.

  • ISO/IEC Directives Parts 1 and 2
Guidelines governing the development and drafting of international standards, ensuring consistency and clarity.

  • Other IEC and EN standards on lighting controls and electronic controlgear
Standards covering digital interfaces, communication protocols, and safety requirements complement SIST EN IEC 63128:2019/A1:2024.

Practical Value

Adoption of SIST EN IEC 63128:2019/A1:2024 ensures:

  • Consistency and quality in analogue dimming control for modern LED lighting installations.
  • Enhanced user experience through warm dimming, offering natural, aesthetically pleasing lighting changes that mimic incandescent lamps.
  • Clear product marking facilitating selection, compliance, and interoperability.
  • A well-defined framework supporting manufacturers in developing products that meet European and international dimming control requirements.
  • Guidance for designers and engineers to implement lighting systems with smooth, reproducible color temperature shifts during dimming cycles, improving lighting design flexibility.

By aligning to this standard, stakeholders improve the performance, market acceptance, and regulatory compliance of dimmable LED lighting products, contributing to energy efficiency and user satisfaction in lighting applications.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
