Overview

SIST EN 62386-302:2018/A1:2024 is an essential European standard detailing particular requirements for absolute input devices within the Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) protocol. Specifically, this amendment updates Part 302 of the EN 62386 series, focusing on input devices such as sliders, rotary switches, and absolute input controls. This standard, published and approved by CENELEC in May 2024, supplements the original 2017 edition to ensure compatibility and enhanced interoperability in modern lighting control systems.

As part of the comprehensive IEC 62386 family, SIST EN 62386-302:2018/A1:2024 aims to standardize the way lighting input devices communicate absolute position information to lighting control systems, fostering consistency across products and regions. National committees across Europe are mandated to implement this standard by February 2025.

Key Topics

  • Absolute Input Device Requirements
The standard defines requirements for input devices that provide an absolute position value-in contrast to relative input devices-delivering precise analog or digital position as a signal to the lighting control system. This includes switches, sliders, and rotary devices transmitting a definitive value between start and end points.

  • Compliance With IEC 62386-103:2022
EN 62386-302:2017/A1 is explicitly linked to IEC 62386-103:2022, ensuring that absolute input devices adhere to updated measurement and signaling protocols within the DALI ecosystem.

  • Signal Debouncing and Event Handling
The amendment specifies the need for input signal debouncing to avoid erroneous or multiple signals from mechanical noise, guaranteeing a maximum 80 ms response time after a signal change. Event notifications are rigorously defined with priority levels and filtering mechanisms to optimize communication efficiency.

  • Report Timer Usage
Timers controlling periodic status reports (the "report timer") are standardized to prevent communication conflicts when multiple devices report simultaneously. The standard recommends staggered timing and restricts unnecessary event spam on the DALI bus.

  • Insulation and Safety
Supplementary insulation requirements address safety concerns by mandating isolation of accessible parts depending on connected components, particularly sensors and mechanical switches.

  • Updated Terminology and References
This amendment updates normative references, replacing outdated citations (IEC 62386-101:2014 and IEC 62386-103:2014) with the latest editions from 2022, ensuring technological relevancy.

Applications

  • Smart Lighting Systems
SIST EN 62386-302:2018/A1:2024 is critical for smart building and infrastructure projects utilizing DALI for lighting control, where accurate and reliable input from physical devices like dimmers, sliders, or position sensors is crucial.

  • User Interface Devices in Lighting Controls
Developers and manufacturers of lighting controls can use this standard to design compliant input interfaces, ensuring that their devices integrate seamlessly with DALI-based networks and controllers.

  • Integration in Building Automation
Buildings with automated lighting rely on standard-compliant input devices for precise control of light scenes, brightness levels, and dynamic adjustments, which are supported and standardized under this document.

  • Safety-Critical Installations
Facilities requiring strict safety and electromagnetic compatibility measures benefit from the insulation and signal integrity requirements set forth by the standard.

Related Standards

  • EN 62386-103:2022
Defines general requirements for control devices that EN 62386-302 references for input device measurement and signaling.

  • EN 62386-333:2018
Addresses manual configuration requirements for control devices, complementary to the input device specifications in Part 302.

  • IEC 62386 Series
The overarching standard for DALI systems covering control gear, input devices, and communication protocols.

Conclusion

SIST EN 62386-302:2018/A1:2024 represents a vital amendment ensuring that absolute input devices used in DALI lighting systems meet up-to-date requirements for accuracy, safety, and interoperability. This standard supports the development and deployment of advanced lighting controls in professional and commercial installations throughout Europe. Compliance facilitates seamless integration, enhances system reliability, and supports the ongoing evolution of smart lighting technologies.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall att
